2 Peter 1:4

Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.

Let me summarize:

an hour a day contemplating the life of Christ from the gospels or desire of ages.

an hour a day contemplating the Word of God

praying and contemplating the promises of God

can we fit God into our daily busy schedule??

Guard jealously your hours for prayer and self-examination.  Set apart some portion of each day for a study of the Scriptures and communion with God.  Thus you will obtain spiritual strength, and grow in grace and favor with God.  He alone can direct our thoughts aright.  He alone can give us noble aspirations, and fashion our characters after the divine similitude.  If we draw near to him in earnest prayer, he will fill our hearts with high and holy purposes, and with deep, earnest longing for purity and cleanness of thought.  {RH, November 10, 1910 par. 14}

The belated traveler, hurrying to reach the city gate by the going down of the sun, could not turn aside for any attractions by the way.  His whole mind was bent on the one purpose of entering the gate.  The same intensity of purpose, said Jesus, is required in the Christian life.  I have opened to you the glory of character, which is the true glory of My kingdom.  It offers you no promise of earthly dominion; yet it is worthy of your supreme desire and effort.  I do not call you to battle for the supremacy of the world's great empire, but do not therefore conclude that there is no battle to be fought nor victories to be won.  I bid you strive, agonize, to enter into My spiritual kingdom.  {MB 141.1}

A revival of true godliness among us is the greatest and most urgent of all our needs.  To seek this should be our first work.  There must be earnest effort to obtain the blessing of the Lord, not because God is not willing to bestow His blessing upon us, but because we are unprepared to receive it.  Our heavenly Father is more willing to give His Holy Spirit to them that ask Him, than are earthly parents to give good gifts to their children.  But it is our work, by confession, humiliation, repentance, and earnest prayer, to fulfill the conditions upon which God has promised to grant us His blessing.  A revival need be expected only in answer to prayer.  While the people are so destitute of God's Holy spirit, they cannot appreciate the preaching of the Word; but when the Spirit's power touches their hearts, then the discourses given will not be without effect.  Guided by the teachings of God's Word, with the manifestation of His Spirit, in the exercise of sound discretion, those who attend our meetings will gain a precious experience, and returning home, will be prepared to exert a healthful influence.  {1SM 121.1}

There is a work that every one of us must do if we would be saved in the eternal world.  But while we must on our part do what God has given us to do, we must realize that, having done all, we should come far short of salvation, did not the Lord on his part do that which finite, sinful man cannot do for himself.  The religious life is wholly dependent upon the blending of both human and divine forces.   Man is to work out his own salvation, but he cannot do this without divine aid; and although Christ has paid an infinite price to save the souls of men from everlasting ruin, he will not do that part of the work which was left for man to perform.  We are to live by faith.  We are not to be controlled by impulse and feeling, but the principles of God's law must govern our lives.  While we look to Jesus as the source of all power, we shall not fail to receive help in every time of need, "for it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure."  {RH, October 30, 1888 par. 2}

While our salvation is wholly dependent upon Jesus, yet we have a work to do in order that we shall be saved.  The apostle says, "Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure."  The work that we are to do is not independent of what God is to do, but a work of cooperation with God.  The power and the grace of God is to be wrought into the heart by the divine Worker, but some go astray here, claiming that man has a work to do that is wholly independent of any work of God.   Another class take the other extreme, and say that man is free from all obligation, because God does the whole work -- both the willing and doing.  But the true ground to take is that the human will must be in subjection to the divine will.  The will of man is not to be forced into cooperation with divine agencies, but must be voluntarily submitted.  Man has no power of himself to work out his own salvation.  Salvation must be the result of cooperation with divine power, and God will not do that for man which he can do for himself.  Man is wholly dependent on the grace of Christ.  He has no power to move one step in the direction of Christ unless the Spirit of God draws him.  The Holy Spirit is continually drawing the soul, and will continue to draw until by persistent refusal the sinner grieves away the tender messenger of God.  {ST, February 12, 1894 par. 2}

Behold Him in the garden, sweating great drops of blood. A solitary angel is sent from heaven to strengthen the Son of God. Follow Him on His way to the judgment hall, while He is derided, mocked, and insulted by that infuriated mob.  Behold Him clothed in that old purple kingly robe. Hear the coarse jest and cruel mocking. See them place upon that noble brow the crown of thorns, and then smite Him with a reed, causing the thorns to penetrate His temples, and the blood to flow from that holy brow. Hear that murderous throng eagerly crying for the blood of the Son of God. He is delivered into their hands, and they lead the noble sufferer away, pale, weak, and fainting, to His crucifixion. He is stretched upon the wooden cross, and the nails are driven through His tender hands and feet. Behold Him hanging upon the cross those dreadful hours of agony until the angels veil their faces from the horrid scene, and the sun hides its light, refusing to behold. Think of these things, and then ask, Is the way too strait? No, no.  1T 240.2-1T 241.1

When there are set before us things that are a cross for us to take up, we can never be one with Christ until we have lifted the cross.  It may be the cross of confession, the cross of repentance, the cross of humiliation; but whatever it may be, let us remember that in lifting it, we are one with Christ, partakers of the divine nature.  He suffered the agony, he endured the reproach, and he cried out, "My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?"  It was because of our sins -- because of your sins and mine -- that he was thus afflicted.  {RH, May 18, 1905 par. 7}

How far short of reaching this standard falls the church of today! Strife, discord, selfish pride of opinion,  self-exaltation,self, self, self,all this is manifest in those who claim to be followers of the meek and lowly Jesus. When shall we awake? When shall we meet the expectations of Christ? . 1888 1794.3

The old standard bearers knew what it was to wrestle with God in prayer, and to enjoy the outpouring of His Spirit.  But these are passing off from the stage of action; and who are coming up to fill their places?  How is it with the rising generation?  Are they converted to God?  Are we awake to the work that is going on in the heavenly sanctuary, or are we waiting for some compelling power to come upon the church before we shall arouse?  Are we hoping to see the whole church revived?  That time will never come.  {1SM 122.1}

True riches are genuine faith and genuine love. These make the character complete in Christ. If there were more faith, simple, trusting faith in Jesus, there would be love, pure love, which is the gold of Christian character.

By His Holy Spirit the Lord will demonstrate that His word is the only thing that can make men right and keep them right. I have been shown that God's revealed truth alone can keep men in the path of humble obedience. Standard bearers are falling around us, not only through death, but through the deceptions of Satan. All heaven is looking upon the remnant people of God, to see if they will make truth alone their shield and buckler. Unless the truth is presented as it is in Jesus, and is planted in the heart by the power of the Spirit of God, even ministers will be found drifting away from Christ, away from piety, away from religious principle. They will become blind leaders of the blind. 11MR 91.1
