There must be earnest effort to obtain the blessing of the Lord, not because God is not willing to bestow his blessing upon us, but because we are unprepared to receive it. Our Heavenly Father is more willing to give his Holy Spirit to them that ask him, than are earthly parents to give good gifts to their children. But it is our work, by confession, humiliation, repentance, and earnest prayer, to fulfill the conditions upon which God has promised to grant us his blessing. RH March 22,1887

Those who have not humbled their souls before God in acknowledging their guilt, have not yet fulfilled the first condition of acceptance.  If we have not experienced that repentance which is not to be repented of, and have not with true humiliation of soul and brokenness of spirit confessed our sins, abhorring our iniquity, we have never truly sought for the forgiveness of sin; and if we have never sought, we have never found the peace of God.  The only reason why we do not have remission of sins that are past is that we are not willing to humble our hearts and comply with the conditions of the word of truth.  Explicit instruction is given concerning this matter.  Confession of sin, whether public or private, should be heartfelt and freely expressed.  It is not to be urged from the sinner.  It is not to be made in a flippant and careless way, or forced from those who have no realizing sense of the abhorrent character of sin.  The confession that is the outpouring of the inmost soul finds its way to the God of infinite pity.  The psalmist says, "The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit."  Psalm 34:18.  {SC 37.4}

The blood of Christ is efficacious, but it needs to be applied continually. God not only wants His servants to use the means He has intrusted to them for His glory, but He desires them to make a consecration of themselves to His cause.Testimonies, vol. 4, pp. 120-122.

The salvation of men depends upon a continual application to their hearts of the cleansing blood of Christ.  Therefore, the Lord's supper was not to be observed only occasionally or yearly, but more frequently than the annual passover.  This solemn ordinance commemorates a far greater event than the deliverance of the children of Israel from Egypt.  That deliverance was typical of the great atonement which Christ made by the sacrifice of his own life for the final deliverance of his people.  {3SG 228.1}

Yes, that is interesting that the Passover is called an "ordinance".  That shows it was designated by the Lord to be kept, and Jesus kept it.

So if Jesus is our perfect example, we should keep it too. smile

When a spirit of contention struggles for the supremacy, call a halt, and make things right, else Christ will come quickly, and will remove your candlestick out of its place. Let an earnest work of repentance be done. Let the Spirit of God search through mind and heart, and cleanse away all that hinders the needed reformation. Until this is done, God can not bestow on us His power and grace. And while we are without His power and grace, men will stumble and fall, and will not know at what they stumble.

My brethren, read the book of Revelation from beginning to end, and ask yourselves whether you might not better spend less time in strife and contention, and begin to think of how fast we are approaching the last great crisis. Those who seek to make it appear that there is no special meaning attached to the judgments that the Lord is now sending upon the earth will soon be forced to understand that which now they do not choose to understand.  RH 1903 august 20

The reason many in this age of the world make no greater advancement in the divine life is because they interpret the will of God to be just what they will to do.  While following their own desires, they flatter themselves that they are conforming to God's will.  These have no conflicts with self.  There are others who for a time are successful in the struggle against their selfish desire for pleasure and ease.  They are sincere and earnest, but grow weary of protracted effort, of daily death, of ceaseless turmoil.  Indolence seems inviting, death to self repulsive; and they close their drowsy eyes and fall under the power of temptation instead of resisting it.  {AA 565.2}

The religion of self makes easy conversions.  Scripture is perverted, God dethroned, and self deified.  The operation of the Holy Spirit on hearts is denied.  This is the new, broad way, substituted as an improvement on the strait gate and the narrow way.  When self becomes thus prominent, God is lost sight of and the work cannot prosper.  The Lord is misrepresented and misjudged.  The importance of the truth is lost to view while human opinions rise to vast importance.  Thus the experience is cheapened.  Zeal for self takes the place of the higher aims which should mold the life.  Egotism develops and strengthens.  Religion is used as a means for carrying out selfish purposes.  The solemn claims of God are treated as a farce, spoken of with levity and irreverence.  A man with such an experience has lost his anchorage, and is drifting without guide or compass.  {18MR 271.2}

If you indulge stubbornness of heart, and through pride and self-righteousness do not confess your faults, you will be left subject to Satan's temptations.  If when the Lord reveals your errors you do not repent or make confession, his providence will bring you over the ground again and again.  You will be left to make mistakes of a similar character, you will continue to lack wisdom, and will call sin righteousness, and righteousness sin.  The multitude of deceptions that will prevail in these last days will encircle you, and you will change leaders, and not know that you have done so.  {RH, December 16, 1890 par. 19}

The abiding restwho has it? That rest is found when all self-justification, all reasoning from a selfish standpoint, is put away. Entire self-surrender, an acceptance of his ways, is the secret of perfect rest in his love. We must learn his meekness and lowliness before we experience the fulfilment of the promise, Ye shall find rest unto your souls. It is by learning the habits of Christ that self becomes transformed,by taking his yoke, and then submitting to learn.  . RH April 25,  1899, par. 8

In rejecting the truth, men reject its Author.  In trampling upon the law of God, they deny the authority of the Law-giver.  It is as easy to make an idol of false doctrines and theories as to fashion an idol of wood or stone.  By misrepresenting the attributes of God, Satan leads men to conceive of Him in a false character.  With many, a philosophical idol is enthroned in the place of Jehovah; while the living God, as He is revealed in His word, in Christ, and in the works of creation, is worshiped by but few.  Thousands deify nature while they deny the God of nature.  Though in a different form, idolatry exists in the Christian world today as verily as it existed among ancient Israel in the days of Elijah.  The god of many professedly wise men, of philosophers, poets, politicians, journalists -- the god of polished fashionable circles, of many colleges and universities, even of some theological institutions -- is little better than Baal, the sun-god of Phoenicia.  {GC 583.1}

Some who engage in missionary service are weak, nerveless, spiritless, easily discouraged. They lack push. They have not those positive traits of character that give power to do something,the spirit and energy that kindle enthusiasm.

Those who would win success must be courageous and hopeful. They should cultivate not only the passive but the active virtues.

While they are to give the soft answer that turns away wrath, they must possess the courage of a hero to resist evil. With the charity that endures all things, they need the force of character that will make their influence a positive power. . . .

There is in true Christian character an indomitableness that can not be molded or subdued by adverse circumstances. We must have moral backbone, an integrity that can not be flattered, bribed, or terrified.Ministry of Healing, pp. 497, 498.

Nothing is gained by cowardice or by fearing to let it be known that we are God's commandment-keeping people.  Hiding our light, as if ashamed of our faith, will result only in disaster.  God will leave us to our own weakness.  May the Lord forbid that we should refuse to let our light shine forth in any place to which He may call us.  If we venture to go forth of ourselves, following our own ideas, our own plans, and leave Jesus behind, we need not expect to gain fortitude, courage, or spiritual strength.  God has had moral heroes, and He has them now, -- those who are not ashamed of being His peculiar people.  Their wills and plans are all subordinate to the law of God.  The love of Jesus has led them not to count their lives dear unto themselves.  Their work has been to catch the light from the word of God and to let it shine forth in clear, steady rays to the world.  "Fidelity to God" is their motto.  {5T 527.2}

The Lord abhors indifference and disloyalty in a time of crisis in His work.  The whole universe is watching with inexpressible interest the closing scenes of the great controversy between good and evil.  The people of God are nearing the borders of the eternal world; what can be of more importance to them than that they be loyal to the God of heaven?  All through the ages, God has had moral heroes, and He has them now -- those who, like Joseph and Elijah and Daniel, are not ashamed to acknowledge themselves His peculiar people.  His special blessing accompanies the labors of men of action, men who will not be swerved from the straight line of duty, but who with divine energy will inquire, "Who is on the Lord's side?" (Exodus 32:26), men who will not stop merely with the inquiry, but who will demand that those who choose to identify themselves with the people of God shall step forward and reveal unmistakably their allegiance to the King of kings and Lord of lords.  Such men make their wills and plans subordinate to the law of God.  For love of Him they count not their lives dear unto themselves.  Their work is to catch the light from the Word and let it shine forth to the world in clear, steady rays.  Fidelity to God is their motto.  {PK 148.1}

If the servants of God will walk with Him in faith, He will give power to their message. They will be enabled so to present His love and the danger of rejecting the grace of God, that men will be constrained to accept the gospel.

Christ will perform wonderful miracles if men will but do their God-given part. In human hearts today as great a transformation may be wrought as has ever been wrought in generations past. . . . Through human agents who cooperate with the divine, many a poor outcast will be reclaimed, and in his turn will seek to restore the image of God in man. There are those who have had very meager opportunities, who have walked in ways of error because they knew no better way, to whom beams of light will come. . . . Many will come from the grossest error and sin, and will take the place of others who have had opportunities and privileges but have not prized them.Christs Object Lessons, pp. 235, 236

The Lord will interfere to vindicate his own honor, to repress the swellings of unrighteousness and bold transgression.  He will not be left without witness.  The one-hour laborers will be brought in at the eleventh hour, and will consecrate their ability and their entrusted means to advance the Lord's work.  While many have reduced the Word, the truth, the holy law of Jehovah, to a dead letter, and by their example testify that this law is a hard, rigorous burden; while they say, "We will lay off this yoke, we will be free, we will no longer remain in covenant relation with God, we will do as we please," there will be men who have had very meager opportunities, who have walked in ways of error because they knew no better way, to whom beams of light will come.  As the word of Christ came to Zacchaeus, "I must abide at thy house," so the word will come to them; and those supposed to be hardened sinners will be found to have hearts as tender as a child's, because Christ has deigned to notice them.  These will receive the reward for their faithfulness because they are true to principle, and shun not their duty to declare the whole counsel of God.  When those who have had abundance of light throw off the restraint which the Word of God imposes, and make void his law, others will come in to fill their place and take their crown.  {RH, December 21, 1897 par. 8}

The Lord will put new, vital force into His work as human agencies obey the command to go forth and proclaim the truth.  He who declared that His truth would shine forever will proclaim this truth through faithful messengers, who will give the trumpet a certain sound.  The truth will be criticized, scorned, and derided; but the closer it is examined and tested, the brighter it will shine.  {SpTB02 51.1}

As a people, we are to stand firm on the platform of eternal truth that has withstood test and trial.  We are to hold to the sure pillars of our faith.  The principles of truth that God has revealed to us are our only true foundation.  They have made us what we are.  The lapse of time has not lessened their value.  It is the constant effort of the enemy to remove these truths from their setting, and to put in their place spurious theories.  He will bring in everything that he possibly can to carry out his deceptive designs.  But the Lord will raise up men of keen perception, who will give these truths their proper place in the plan of God.  {SpTB02 51.2}

It is our privilege to have faith and salvation. The power of God has not decreased. It would be just as freely bestowed now as formerly; but the church have lost their faith to claim, their energy to wrestle, as did Jacob, crying, I will not let Thee go, except thou bless me. Enduring faith has been dying away. It must be revived in the hearts of God's people. They must claim the blessing. Faith, living faith, always leads upward to God and glory; unbelief, downward to darkness and death.  . RH September 4,  1883, par. 9-RH September 4,  1883, par. 10

Many receive the truth readily, but they fail to assimilate truth, and its influence is not abiding.

They are like the foolish virgins, who had no oil in their vessels with their lamps.

Oil is a symbol of the Holy Spirit, which is brought into the soul through faith in Jesus Christ.

Those who earnestly search the Scriptures with much prayer, who rely upon God with firm faith, who obey his commandments, will be among those who are represented as wise virgins.. RH September 17,  1895, par. 6

When the third angel's message is preached as it should be, power attends its proclamation, and it becomes an abiding influence.  It must be attended with divine power, or it will accomplish nothing.  I am often referred to the parable of the ten virgins, five of whom were wise, and five foolish.  This parable has been and will be fulfilled to the very letter, for it has a special application to this time, and, like the third angel's message, has been fulfilled and will continue to be present truth till the close of time.  In the parable, the ten virgins had lamps, but only five of them had the saving oil with which to keep their lamps burning.  This represents the condition of the Church.  The wise and the foolish have their Bibles, and are provided with all the means of grace; but many do not appreciate the fact that they must have the heavenly unction.  They do not heed the invitation, "Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.  Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.  For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light."   {RH, August 19, 1890 par. 3}

Unction = Anointing

"Come unto me" involves what specifically, because that is the anointing?

 I think there are several ways of answering this question.

One way of doing so is to say that "come unto me" involves partaking of Christ's life.

The quote below says that the Father's life flowed into Christ, and likewise that Christ's life flows into us, and "taking to give" is the law of life for the universe.

This is a profound truth.

---

But turning from all lesser representations, we behold God in Jesus.  Looking unto Jesus we see that it is the glory of our God to give.  "I do nothing of Myself," said Christ; "the living Father hath sent Me, and I live by the Father."  "I seek not Mine own glory," but the glory of Him that sent Me.  John 8:28; 6:57; 8:50; 7:18.  In these words is set forth the great principle which is the law of life for the universe.  All things Christ received from God, but He took to give.  So in the heavenly courts, in His ministry for all created beings: through the beloved Son, the Father's life flows out to all; through the Son it returns, in praise and joyous service, a tide of love, to the great Source of all.  And thus through Christ the circuit of beneficence is complete, representing the character of the great Giver, the law of life.  {DA 21.2}

Jesus invites, "Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.  Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart, and ye shall find rest unto your souls."  "Take my yoke," says Christ; "learn of me."  In doing this, you will find rest to your souls.  You will be learning in the school of Christ to be meek and lowly in spirit, and to wear his yoke with cheerfulness.  Have you found this rest?  If not, there is something for you to do.  Come to Jesus with brokenness of heart and contrition of spirit, praying for his grace.  The melting power of God can do wonders in subduing the heart, and making it tender and impressible.  The Lord is gracious; and when you have done all that is required on your part, you will find his words true.  "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."  He never fails.  You may come to him with full assurance of faith, and he will fill your heart with rest, and peace, and love.  {RH, April 29, 1884 par. 10}

It would be well to spend a thoughtful hour each day reviewing the life of Christ from the manger to Calvary. We should take it point by point and let the imagination vividly grasp each scene, especially the closing ones of His earthly life. By thus contemplating His teachings and sufferings, and the infinite sacrifice made by Him for the redemption of the race, we may strengthen our faith, quicken our love, and become more deeply imbued with the spirit which sustained our Saviour. If we would be saved at last we must all learn the lesson of penitence and faith at the foot of the cross.. 4T 374.1

All who are under the training of God need the quiet hour for communion with their own hearts, with nature, and with God.  In them is to be revealed a life that is not in harmony with the world, its customs, or its practices; and they need to have a personal experience in obtaining a knowledge of the will of God.  We must individually hear Him speaking to the heart.  When every other voice is hushed, and in quietness we wait before Him, the silence of the soul makes more distinct the voice of God.  He bids us, "Be still, and know that I am God."  Psalm 46:10.  This is the effectual preparation for all labor for God.  Amidst the hurrying throng, and the strain of life's intense activities, he who is thus refreshed will be surrounded with an atmosphere of light and peace.  He will receive a new endowment of both physical and mental strength.  His life will breathe out a fragrance, and will reveal a divine power that will reach men's hearts.  {MH 58.3}
