Who is God?

According to Kellogg, an early SDA pioneer, God is in the flower, the trees, etc. According to our new Fundamental Beliefs, modified in the 1980's God is; composed of three Divine beings. God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. So WHO is God with this definition? None of three, all of the three, God by committee. Which is very much like the way Kellogg defined God.

What the pioneers believed, including Ellen White. God is the Father of Christ, He has a Son, Jesus. He has a representative, the Holy Spirit. By this definition, who is God? The Father, who BEGAT a Son. To this Son, Jesus, He (the FATHER) ordained that His Son should have the same powers His Father possessed, including "eternity". Since the Father begat (NOT created, BEGAT) His Son BEFORE time began, before anything was created, that is a very good definition of "time". What is "time" to a being who has no beginning? When could you say Jesus began, when "time" did not yet exist? Jesus then is eternal.

On the other hand, my attempts to define eternity and time are really above my pay grade, and yours! I just accept two conflicting truths. Jesus was begotten, by His Father, who granted Him all the powers of His Father. Jesus is also eternal, for without Him, nothing was made that was made, including the concept of "time".

The modern SDA Fundamental beliefs make God some kind of mystical concept, God, by committee. This, I reject with all my heart. I will go with the pioneers. God the Father, His Son, granted all the powers of His Father, and His representative, His Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit, by the way, represents equally both the Father and the Son. Not one, or the other, but both. Why? Because the Father ordained that His Son be equal to Himself in all regards!

Jesus created all things!!! Where did He get that power? From His Father! It's not really complicated. The SDA Fundamental Beliefs have made it complicated, more in line with Kellogg than Ellen White. Know this: I am a Seventh-day Adventist, period. I believe God has a Church, organized for service, that bears the SDA name. As defective and backward as it may be, it remains the apple of His eye.

I appreciate your post. Now here's a fact, easily verifiable with a simple search. The SDA official position readily acknowledges that the doctrine of Christ being the Son of God is an "assumption". They assume He is not literally the Son of God. Why? First off, because Christ is eternal, which He is! Second, Christ created everything, so He must be God, or another God, or something. Christ created everything because His Father gave Him that power! A crude way of saying it would be: God is a three headed "something".

Think about it, WHO is God? A committee? A vapor without body? A concept, but not a literal thing, person, being? Our Fundamental Beliefs were changed in the 1980's to reflect our current position, based on an "assumption" that there are three Gods. When it sinks in, what we have done is not unlike Kellogg did, destroy the very nature of God. This is a huge problem we have swept under the rug. Who is God, really? He is the same being that showed Moses His backside on the mountain. The literal Father of Christ, not a symbol, not a "ghost", not an assumption, not a committee. This is a deeply serious flaw. Are there three Gods or one? The Bible says there is one God, not three. There are many who understand this, but few that dare speak up. There are SDA PASTORS and Church leaders that understand this, but they dare not speak up. The Conferences, at the highest level would have them removed. This idea that God is a committee of three is wide spread. It can be found in virtually every off-shoot group as well as the organized Church. Laodicea indeed!

Two of the previous posters have used the word "committee" in a negative way in referring to God.

Whether we use this word or not, it is helpful to think of the Father, Son, and Spirit as having distinct roles and ways of doing things, and that it is structured this way in part to illustrate the various aspects of the Godhead

A central example may be useful.

Hebrews 2:10-18 and 4:14-16 describe Christ the Son as taking on human nature, to be retained forever, and one of the last Bible passages written reiterates this point (1 John 4:2).

Hebrews 4:15 makes clear that Christ did this so as to be a more complete Saviour of fallen humanity.

This is a rich theme, with a large amount of Bible and Spirit of Prophecy material behind it.

As an illustration of this, the first quote below talks about how Christ retains His humanity forever, and the second quote about how Christ's eternal humanity operates in harmony with the work of the Holy Spirit.

---

(1)

To assure us of His immutable counsel of peace, God gave His only-begotten Son to become one of the human family, forever to retain His human nature.  This is the pledge that God will fulfill His word.  "Unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon His shoulder."  God has adopted human nature in the person of His Son, and has carried the same into the highest heaven.  It is the "Son of man" who shares the throne of the universe.  It is the "Son of man" whose name shall be called, "Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace."  Isaiah 9:6.  The I AM is the Daysman between God and humanity, laying His hand upon both.  He who is "holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners," is not ashamed to call us brethren.  Hebrews 7:26;  2:11.  In Christ the family of earth and the family of heaven are bound together.  Christ glorified is our brother.  Heaven is enshrined in humanity, and humanity is enfolded in the bosom of Infinite Love.  {DA 25.3}

(2)

Cumbered with humanity, Christ could not be in every place personally; therefore it was altogether for their advantage that He should leave them, go to His father, and send the Holy Spirit to be His successor on earth.  The Holy Spirit is Himself divested of the personality of humanity and independent thereof.  He would represent Himself as present in all places by His Holy Spirit, as the Omnipresent.  "But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in My name, He shall (although unseen by you), teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you" [John 14:26].  "Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will come not unto you; but if I depart, I will send Him unto you" [John 16:7].  {14MR 23.3}

That the God Head is composed of three Divine beings is without question. As they are all of one mind, I suppose this could be called a committee, more appropriate perhaps would be a family. Who is the head of the family? The Father. The family is not the head, that goes to a specific member of the family. God is the Father, of everything, literally. Modern SDA position is that they refute God the Father is literally the Father of Jesus. The concept is that Jesus is only "role-playing", He's not really the Son of God. The Bible says He is. To say He is heresy. This is a profound snub and an insult to God, who begat a Son and has a representative, the Holy Spirit.

The God Head is fairly easy to understand, God, His begotten Son, and their representative, the Holy Spirit. In a similar manner Ellen White explains how Christ and His disciples are one:

"The unity that exists between Christ and His disciples does not destroy the personality of either. They are one in purpose, in mind, in character, but not in person. It is thus that God and Christ are one." {8T 269.4}

Who IS God in the above statement, "God and Christ"? Satan's battle in heaven was not against God's Son, it was against God, His Father. Satan clearly understood the relationship between God and His Son. This is WHY the official SDA position, Fundamental Belief #2, is based on an assumption, which is readily acknowledged by the Church. An assumption added to our Fundamental Beliefs in the 1980s. I believe those who are translated will have a clear understanding of this, as did the apostles before Christ returns.

This concept that God is composed of three separate beings, as both SDA and Catholics believe, destroys the individuality and personality of God, Christ's Father. This is exactly what Kellogg was doing. We are going over the same ground again! There is ONE God, not three. God is not a fourth "thing" of some mysterious, unexplainable nature without form or body of any kind that can be found in the flowers and the mist of the morning. Such representations are foolishness, says Ellen White.

the pillars of our faith were established in the 1800s and it was the foundation of their beliefs
when men deviate from the foundation and start to tear it apart we have nothing

for sure we are at the beginning of the shaking and the Straight Testimony will clear things   up

   Jesus Himself will clarify things and those that believe will be the remnant army of the Lord to

...

Before the fall of Satan, the Father consulted his Son in regard to the formation of man.  They purposed to make this world, and create beasts and living things upon it, and to make man in the image of God, to reign as a ruling monarch over every living thing which God should create.  When Satan learned the purpose of God, he was envious at Christ, and jealous because the Father had not consulted him in regard to the creation of man.  Satan was of the highest order of angels; but Christ was above all.  He was the commander of all Heaven.  He imparted to the angelic family the high commands of his Father.  The envy and jealousy of Satan increased.  Until his rebellion all Heaven was in harmony, and perfect subjection to the government of God.  Satan commenced to insinuate his dissatisfied feelings to other angels, and a number agreed to aid him in his rebellion.  Satan was dissatisfied, with his position.  Although very exalted, he aspires to be equal with God; and unless the Lord gratifies his ambition, determines to rebel, and refuse submission.  He desires, yet dare not at once venture to make known his envious, hateful feelings.  But he contents himself with gaining all he can to sympathize with him, as though deeply wronged.  He relates to them his thoughts of warring against Jehovah. {3SG 36.1}

True, faithful angels, listening, hear the awful threats of Satan, and immediately report to their great commander.  Christ tells them that he and the Father are acquainted with the purposes of Satan, and that they are forbearing only to see how many will unite with him to rebel against the government of God.  He tells them that every purpose of Satan is understood.  It was the highest crime to rebel against the government of God.  All Heaven seemed in commotion.  The angels were marshaled in companies, each with a higher commanding angel at their head.  All the angels were astir.  Satan was warring against the government of God, because ambitious to exalt himself and unwilling to submit to the authority of God's Son, Heaven's great commander.  {3SG 37.1}

While some of the angels joined Satan in his rebellion, others reasoned with him to dissuade him from his purposes, contending for the honor and wisdom of God in giving authority to his Son.  Satan urged, for what reason was Christ endowed with unlimited power and such high command above himself!  He stood up proudly, and urged that he should be equal with God.  He makes his boasts to his sympathizers that he will not submit to the authority of Christ.  {3SG 37.2}

At length all the angels are summoned to appear before the Father, to have each case decided.  Satan unblushingly makes known to all the heavenly family, his discontent, that Christ should be preferred before him, to be in such close conference with God, and he be uninformed as to the result of their frequent consultations.  God informs Satan that this he can never know.  That to his Son will he reveal his secret purposes, and that all the family of Heaven, Satan not excepted, were required to yield implicit obedience.  Satan boldly speaks out his rebellion, and points to a large company who think God is unjust in not exalting him to be equal with God, and in not giving him command above Christ.  He declares he cannot submit to be under Christ's command, that God's commands alone will he obey.  Good angels weep to hear the words of Satan, and to see how he despises to follow the direction of Christ, their exalted and loving commander.  {3SG 37.3}

The Father decides the case of Satan, and declares that he must be turned out of Heaven for his daring rebellion, and that all those who united with him in his rebellion, should be turned out with him.  Then there was war in Heaven.  Christ and his angels fought against Satan and his angels, for they were determined to remain in Heaven with all their rebellion.  But they prevailed not. Christ and loyal angels triumphed, and drove Satan and his rebel sympathizers from Heaven.  {3SG 38.1}

The official position of the Church today is that Jesus is simply "role-playing" in that He is not really God's literal Son. A position that makes a mockery of the testimony of Jesus in 3SG 38.1 and in the Bible's testimony.

Certainly, a remnant of the remnant, and those who deny Christ is the Son of God today, won't be found among that group. It has been made abundantly clear from the Bible and the Spirit of Prophecy that Jesus is the Son of God. SDA's Fundamental Belief #2 denies this. This is not going away, it is not to be hidden. Belief #2 is clearly explained as an "assumption" by the Church. The Church readily recognizes there is no clear statement from the Bible or the SOP to sustain their position. And we should not worry about this? The very nature of God and the Son of God is under attack, from His own people! Even the devils understand and know exactly who God and His Son are. And they tremble.

Mark 3:11 And unclean spirits, when they saw him, fell down before him, and cried, saying, Thou art the Son of God.

(SDA, well, He's not "really" the Son of God!)

Luke 4:41 "And devils also came out of many, crying out, and saying, Thou art Christ the Son of God. And he rebuking them suffered them not to speak: for they knew that he was Christ."

Actually, the nature of God is a SALVATION issue. SDA Fundamental Belief #2 has to be changed to reflect the true personality, individuality, personhood, and bodily form of Christ's literal Father, who is the ONE God. There is only one God, not three. The fact that God has granted to His Son and to His representative (the Holy Spirit) all the powers of Divinity, does not make them God. A king may grant to his son, the prince, similar powers, but that does make the prince the king (until the fullness of time has come). In the case of Divinity, the powers of divinity, gifted to the prince (Jesus) came FROM God. Life of himself said, Jesus. Certainly, that's one of the powers of divinity!

The only pioneer in the times of Ellen White who suggested God is literally a spirit, without body, without individual personality, without form was Kellogg. Ellen White gave us serious warnings about Kellogg and these false doctrines. The SDA Church today is in a full-blown Kellogg 2.0 crisis.

Aaron spoke for Moses. Where did the message come from? From Moses, Aaron was just the mouthpiece. Christ's Father, who is God, stood beside Him when Jesus spoke the ten commandments. Where did the message come from? From the Father, Jesus was the spokesperson, as is often the case in the Old Testament. Who was it that showed His backside to Moses? The Father. Unlike Christ, mortal man can behold Him and He spoke face to face with Ellen White. No mortal man can see the Father's face, for he would cease to exist. There was no confusion on this point among the pioneers or Ellen White. They knew precisely who the Father, the Son, and their representative the Holy Spirit was. Kellogg? He didn't know, he introduced confusion, very much like the same confusion we have today.

God is a spirit, a concept, a "fourth God" without personality and body. This. IS. Kellogg 2.0 And by far I am not alone in believing the pioneers and Ellen White had the correct viewpoint on the nature of God, the Father of Christ. Fundamental Belief #2 (and associated beliefs) will not stand the test of time. These MUST be changed, and they will be. God will have a people who know who He is. There is a book coming soon, I won't say more than that, that is at this very moment under review by the BRI. Belief #2 is being scrutinized, it will not stand, it cannot stand. Kellogg and his modern followers (whether they know it or not) will be addressed. Jesus is the Son of God. God has ordained that His Son be equal to Himself in all regards, yet, they are distinct and separate. One in purpose, one in mindset, but not one in body.

"I saw a throne, and on it sat the Father and the Son. I gazed on Jesus countenance and admired His lovely person. The Fathers person I could not behold, for a cloud of glorious light covered Him. I asked Jesus if His Father had a form like Himself. He said He had, but I could not behold it, for said He, 'If you should once behold the glory of His person, you would cease to exist'." Early Writings, pg. 54 Ellen White spoke to Jesus face to face, many times, as did many of the prophets.

Here in Exodus 33:20-23 Moses is asking to see the FATHER! The FATHER answers: "20. And he said, Thou canst not see my face: for there shall no man see me, and live. 21. And the LORD (the Father) said, Behold, there is a place by me, and thou shalt stand upon a rock: 22. And it shall come to pass, while my glory passeth by, that I will put thee in a cleft of the rock, and will cover thee with my hand while I pass by: 23. And I will take away mine hand, and thou shalt see my back parts: but my face shall not be seen."

The word "Lord" can apply to either the Father or the Son. Careful consideration must be given in discerning who it is in any given verse, the Father or His LITERAL Son. Ellen White, Moses, and many others spoke face to face with the Lord Jesus. But no mortal man has ever seen the Lord Father's face.

Here is a principle worthy of deep consideration. When Ellen White uses the word God, she is specifically referring to the Father. While I leave room for an application where this is not the case, I know of NO such instance in the SOP. Now in the Bible there are a couple of instances where it is unclear to which members of the Godhead (The Father or His Son) is being referred to. Such is the case in Isaiah and in John. The Father's name is in Jesus, so it not entirely out of line in not being able to make a clear distinction. But 99% of the time, in the Bible, God is specifically the Father. The fact that we are even having such a discussion is evidence of how far from the mark the modern SDA Fundamental Belief #2 (and more) are. NOTE: Fundamental Belief #2 was put out in 1980, it is a "new belief". It is not only incorrect, but it is also devastating to understanding WHO God is.

Ah, the word Jehovah! Glad you brought that up. Who IS Jehovah? Well, that's something I haven't studied, but let the search begin. A lovely subject. God, as Ellen White uses the term, is always specific, it is the Father of Jesus. I suspect, that like the term Lord, Jehovah may be applied to either Jesus or His Father? Do bear in mind, Jesus has many names. Is one of them Jehovah? Isaiah is an excellent review of His many names. Jesus thought it not robbery to be associated, even called God in Isaiah because it can be difficult to distinctly separate them in every instance.

Who was it speaking to Moses in the burning bush? Who is the great "I am"? You see how profound it is to grasp WHO God is! With the proper reverence, this is such an excellent study. One thing is sure: God is not a concept, He is a divine being, with a body, and a personality. Through His Son, HE (the FATHER) created all things. Did Jesus create all things? Of course, because His Father ordained that Jesus be of .equal status with Himself (the Father). Jehovah, "I am", whew such a study of these things could take a lifetime! It must begin with a clear conception of who God is.

Where does the Bible say Jesus IS God? Where does Ellen White say Jesus IS God? Nowhere, and the church readily admits this is an assumption. As Ellen White said: God is the Father of Christ, Christ is the Son of God. When she says Jesus is "essentially" God, she is not saying He IS God. He is an exact image of His Father. His Father is God, and Jesus is His Son. Is Jesus, and the Holy Spirit divine? Of course! Because God ordained that they be. Whew, this is not complicated, the problem is Laodicea can't see it. If you believe, as the Church does, that Jesus is only "playing a role", that He is not literally the Son of God, you deny the Testimony of Jesus as given to us in the Bible and in the SOP.

The first group of items below is taken from the Bible, using the NASB translation

The second group of items is taken from the Spirit of Prophecy.

---

Isa 7:14 "Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, a virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she will call His name Immanuel.

Isa 9:6 For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.

Mat 1:23 " BEHOLD, THE VIRGIN SHALL BE WITH CHILD AND SHALL BEAR A SON, AND THEY SHALL CALL HIS NAME IMMANUEL," which translated means, " GOD WITH US."

Joh 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

---

In stooping to take the habiliments of a man, Christ did not cease to be God.  The human did not become divine, nor the divine human.  Christ lived the law of God, showing all men and women that through His grace they can do the same.  By faith, in His humanity Christ saw what we are permitted to see by faith -- the atoning sacrifice connected with the Lord upon the mercy seat.  The golden censer is waved, and the incense, the representation of the purity and righteousness of Christ, ascends, bearing the prayers of every soul that receives and believes on Christ to the altar which is before the throne of God.  And Jesus is in the midst.  {12MR 415.3}

Amazed at his dullness of comprehension, Christ asked with pained surprise, "Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known Me, Philip?"  Is it possible that you do not see the Father in the works He does through Me?  Do you not believe that I came to testify of the Father?  "How sayest thou then, Show us the Father?" "He that hath seen Me hath seen the Father."  Christ had not ceased to be God when He became man.  Though He had humbled Himself to humanity, the Godhead was still His own.  Christ alone could represent the Father to humanity, and this representation the disciples had been privileged to behold for over three years.  {DA 663.5}

But although Christ's divine glory was for a time veiled and eclipsed by His assuming humanity, yet He did not cease to be God when He became man.  The human did not take the place of the divine, nor the divine of the human.  This is the mystery of godliness.  The two expressions human and divine were, in Christ, closely and inseparably one, and yet they had a distinct individuality.  Though Christ humbled Himself to become man, the Godhead was still His own.   His Deity could not be lost while He stood faithful and true to His loyalty.  Surrounded with sorrow, suffering, and moral pollution, despised and rejected by the people to whom had been intrusted the oracles of heaven, Jesus could yet speak of Himself as the Son of man in heaven.  He was ready to take once more His divine glory when His work on earth was done.  {ST, May 10, 1899 par. 11}
