2027 date-setting in Adventist circles

Probably most Adventists who are aware of what is being taught among independent Adventist ministries have heard something similar to:

The next Jubilee is in 2027, so this will be either the end, or the sign of the countdown to the end.

Even here in Japan last Sabbath at the little church, (5 attendees) one Sister who is not super observant said this about the 2027 date as if it were accepted fact.

It is not.

Generally this idea is based on what Jesus said in his first sermon in the synagogue that is recorded in Luke 4:18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,

As it has wording very similar to what is written about the Jubilee in Leviticus 25:10 And ye shall hallow the fiftieth year, and proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof: it shall be a jubile unto you; and ye shall return every man unto his possession, and ye shall return every man unto his family.

some people are making the assumption that Jesus said this exactly on a Jubilee day in 27AD.

They attempt to buttress their position by statements such as these from the Spirit of Prophecy in Redemption volume 2: For four thousand years, ever since the declaration was made to Adam that the seed of the woman should bruise the serpent's head, he had been planning his manner of attack.

So their calculations are - Fall of Adam to Christ - 4,000 years.  Jesus' Jubilee sermon plus 2,000 = 2027AD.  They believe that is when this Earth will have its 6,000th birthday, and of course nearly all SDAs believe that according to the types in the week of Creation where God rested the 7th day (and I believe Adam and Eve did too), then this world will experience rest for 1,000 years after Jesus returns.

But the Spirit of Prophecy is emphatic that there are to be no more prophecies based on time.  Recently I watched a sermon by Gregory Lang on the 2027 date, and he spent the greater part of the sermon trying to show people that this date is not date-setting!  One area people try to wiggle around in is that they say that since this doesn't specify the day or hour, then it is OK.  But Ellen White has told us that even the year is not to be known.

Very earnest are they in mapping out the future, which the Lord has placed in a thick cloud, that the day, the month, and even the year may not be known.

(compare the above to what is in Desire of Ages p. 632.)

I was roundly denounced on Youtube for showing the time-setting errors of David Gates, like where he predicted that the Vatican would attack America by getting it to pass a Sunday Law in Spring 2019, and that the SDA church would start persecuting members that same time.   The reason I object and call on people to stop doing that, is exactly the reason laid out in the SOP, that when the date passes and nothing happens, many peoples' faith will be shaken and overthrown, or the date will be so far out, that people will think they are safe for the present, and delay to make preparation (oh, 6 more years?  then let's live like we want for now, and get serious around 2025 or so).

One other big reason I keep pointing out this kind of error, is that it is abundantly obvious from the Holy Scriptures that there are time periods at the end - such as the 1,260, 1,290, and 1,335 days, and when people make extravagant, forbidden predictions regarding a date, some honest, thinking people will think that any studies into dates is bad, and so miss out on amazing truths that are about to unfold before our eyes.

May we pray for the Holy Spirit to guide us into all truth, and then resolve to follow that truth wherever it leads.
