Per Jesus' own words, the Abomination of Desolation has not occurred yet, as I write in 2020: Matt 24:15 When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:) 16 Then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains:
Not one person on the planet has ever heeded these words since 70AD, making it abundantly clear that this prophecy has a future, end-time fulfillment.
The future fulfillment of Mat. 24:15-16 is the abomination of desolation standing in the holy place and not the setting up of it. Jesus didn't say "when ye shall see the standing in the holy place of the abomination of desolation, as told by Daniel" (the event) but "when ye shall see abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel" (the identity of the AoD). So Daniel identifies the AoD itself not the event of standing in the holy place. As to the event, I think that a hint is given in chapter 11, where it talks about the king of the north:
And he shall plant the tabernacles of his palace between the seas in the glorious holy mountain; (v. 45)
In Rev. 17 the king of the north is pictured as the beast on whom the mother of harlots and abominations sits. Now, in 508AD, this abomination was set up by someone else when an host was given against the daily (Dan. 8:12). At the very end, after the beasts recovers from his deadly wound, the AoD will stand in the holy place, and this is done again not by AoD's own power. Someone else has to do it for her. For this reason the beast (the king of the north) needs to plant the tabernacles of his palace in the glorious holy mountain where the holy place is.
Well, personally I do not see any consistency in the view that the abomination of desolation was "set up" in 508AD, only to await some time far in the future for the fulfillment of Jesus' words. The historical position has put our church members to sleep.

One effort more, and then Satans last device is employed. He hears the unceasing cry for Christ to come, for Christ to deliver them. This last strategy is to personate Christ and make them think their prayers are answered. But this answers to the last closing work, the abomination of desolation standing in the holy place. I don't know if this comes as an answer to my question regarding the identity of the abomination of desolation. This quote basically adds nothing to what Jesus said on the Mount of Olives, when he showed that there is a direct connection between the abomination of desolation and the counterfeit of the Second Advent:
Whenye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:) ...Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here [is] Christ, or there; believe [it] not. (Mat. 24:15, 23)
The identity of the abomination of desolation is to be found in the book of Daniel, as Jesus told.
