Omega-3 EFAs fall into two major categories: plant-derived (flax seed oil, containing alpha linolenic acid, or ALA) or marine-derived (fish oil, containing both EPA containing eicosapentaenoic acid  and DHA).

With Flaxseed oil, your body has to convert ALA [alpha linolenic acid] to usable EPA [eicosapentaenoic acid ] before it can be used. The human conversion of ALA to EPA and DHA.

Fish oil is already converted to EPA [eicosapentaenoic acid] by the fishs body.

Heres the point:  By ingesting large amounts of fish oil possibly more than the body needs, one can get too much.  It can cause a stroke.  If one ingests the flaxseed oil the body will convert only the amount of oil that it needs and the excess will be passed out of the body.

That's interesting about the body knowing when to stop processing when it is vegetable-based oil, but not in the fish-based kind.

 Yes that is interesting ....

----------------------------------------

one can buy the flaxseed meal and put it over fruit or cereal as it gives a nutty flavor.....

if the flavor or smell changes to fishy, you know it has gone rancid so don't eat it... we keep ours in the freezer so it never goes rancid

if one is taking fish capsules you won't even know when it is rancid plus how many of us really want to take any more capsules that what we already do?  fish oil can contain toxins such as mercury too and you have to trust that the manufacturer has been honest in processing the oil

-----------------------

We have lost two men in our church in the last couple of years to this problem with fish oil.  One just turned 80 and was vegan for some 20 years but he was taking fish oil of all things.... died of a stroke... blood too thin and ruptured a vessel in the brain.

The other man was vegetarian most of the time and was 75 but his doctor told him to take large amounts of fish oil....  he also died of a stroke.  He was fine the night before fully functioning and the next day dead.
