Gen 42:1 Now when Jacob saw that there was corn in Egypt, Jacob said unto his sons, Why do ye look one upon another?
Gen 42:2 And he said, Behold, I have heard that there is corn in Egypt: get you down thither, and buy for us from thence; that we may live, and not die.
Gen 42:3 And Joseph's ten brethren went down to buy corn in Egypt.
Gen 42:4 But Benjamin, Joseph's brother, Jacob sent not with his brethren; for he said, Lest peradventure mischief befall him.
Gen 42:5 And the sons of Israel came to buy corn among those that came: for the famine was in the land of Canaan.
Gen 42:36 And Jacob their father said unto them, Me have ye bereaved of my children: Joseph is not, and Simeon is not, and ye will take Benjamin away: all these things are against me.
Gen 43:6 And Israel said, Wherefore dealt ye so ill with me, as to tell the man whether ye had yet a brother?
Gen 43:11 And their father Israel said unto them, If it must be so now, do this; take of the best fruits in the land in your vessels, and carry down the man a present, a little balm, and a little honey, spices, and myrrh, nuts, and almonds:
My question..... Why does the bible switch back and forth using the name Jacob sometimes and then Israel others... very confusing to our bible study people that are new.
Jacob had two names, is why. Not only interchangeably used, but what did Jacob mean, what did Israel mean ? Using one name or the other became the giving of a message within a message. Like selah in psalms .

<05541>In context as the source word for <05542 > <Scripture never says to make light of it. flount it, toss it aside, always to study it out.>
ALWAYS - AV-valued - NEVER trodden down or trodden under foot what this Scripture of the Psalms is saying.
NEVER- make light of, toss aside
Never- make light of
NEVER - flout, reject
ALWAYS to weigh, balance what is said in the balances of the Sancyuary / Plan of Salvation
ALWAYS- to be weighed in their meanings as parts of the Plan of Salvation & Works & Doctrines & Mission of God's Words.
So using "Jacob" may send a reference to his past, or what God has done to change him. Israel does reference his victory over self.
I was just reading that part in "Important Facts of Faith in Connection with the Holy Men of Old..." last Sabbath, and thot it was strange too. Somehow, i think a name was much more than just a way to call somebody back then, but our culture has lost that, so it is hard to understand what was going on then with our current mindset.

so true... names meant something back then... do they mean anything today? I wonder... the bible says that some day we will all get new names... wonder what they will be
