It's been since 2005, had almost gotten out of the memory of, but tonite - making gluten steaks.

gluten powder

soy sauce

kitchen boquet

minced garlic

liquid hickory smoke

dried mushrooms - ****ake & oyster mushrooms ( new addition )

{ I forgot to put nutritional yeast flakes in the mix of dry ingredients - woops }  It's been a few years & out of practice

mix all the dry ingredients

in a different container mix all the wet ingredients (garlic goes in the boiling broth )

mix all wet ingredients, reserve part to mix with dry to make dough, part to go in boiling water to make broth, taste & adjust broth as desired - dried mushrooms went in broth.

Usually I used to use a big stock pot & a round wire rack weighted down with a small sauce pan half full of water to keep gluten submerged under boiling liquid.  Too many moves, stock pot gone.

Boil 25-45 min's till done, till tender, chewy, or tougher chewy - as desired.

Remove & set aside for awhile ( are 3+ times bigger than unboiled size )

Can thicken used broth with flour/corn starch & desired seasonings mixture for gravy.

Then while boiling pour frozen or fresh stir fry veggies in & mostly cook, slice up gluten steaks, put back into the mixture.

Have Lo Mein noodles cooking & if desired mashed potatoes cooking on the side too.

If doing mashed potatoes you might only want to slice up the steaks or serve whole  without the stir fry veggies.

One direction = seasoned Lo Mein noodles on the plate topped with sliced gluten steaks and stir fried veggies in the brown gravy.

Other direction = mashed garlic potatoes sided with gluten steaks topped with brown mushroom broth / gravy.

Then use fresh fruit for topping off the meal.

Tell your non veggie friends nothing till after they ate.  smile

Q. what chapter in the Bible featured a famous vegetarian quartet ?

You are correct .....................................   did you peek  ? aww     Hopefully you remembered their story  biggrin

Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah:

Unto whom the prince of the eunuchs gave names: for he gave unto Daniel the name of Belteshazzar; and to Hananiah, of Shadrach; and to Mishael, of Meshach; and to Azariah, of Abednego.

5  And the king appointed them a daily provision of the kings meat, and of the wine which he drank: so nourishing them three years, that at the end thereof they might stand before the king.
6  Now among these were of the children of Judah, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah:
7  Unto whom the prince of the eunuchs gave names: for he gave unto Daniel the name of Belteshazzar; and to Hananiah, of Shadrach; and to Mishael, of Meshach; and to Azariah, of Abednego.
8 ¶  But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the kings meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.
9  Now God had brought Daniel into favour and tender love with the prince of the eunuchs.
10  And the prince of the eunuchs said unto Daniel, I fear my lord the king, who hath appointed your meat and your drink: for why should he see your faces worse liking than the children which are of your sort? then shall ye make me endanger my head to the king.
11  Then said Daniel to Melzar, whom the prince of the eunuchs had set over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah,
12  Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink.
13  Then let our countenances be looked upon before thee, and the countenance of the children that eat of the portion of the kings meat: and as thou seest, deal with thy servants.
14  So he consented to them in this matter, and proved them ten days.
15  And at the end of ten days their countenances appeared fairer and fatter in flesh than all the children which did eat the portion of the kings meat.
16  .Thus Melzar took away the portion of their meat, and the wine that they should drink; and gave them pulse
17 ¶  As for these four children, God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom: and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams.
18  Now at the end of the days that the king had said he should bring them in, then the prince of the eunuchs brought them in before Nebuchadnezzar.
19  And the king communed with them; and among them all was found none like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah: therefore stood they before the king.
20  And in all matters of wisdom and understanding, that the king enquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and astrologers that were in all his realm.

Now a tougher question unless you know where to look.

What do the Hebrew & Babylonian names mean ?  Daniel the name of Belteshazzar; and to Hananiah, of Shadrach; and to Mishael, of Meshach; and to Azariah, of Abednego.

Food/ drink changed, clothing changed, names changed................................................. what were the twin goals of the changes ?

Tell us what the names mean...aww

Twin goals to 1. strip away the identity and loyalty to God as Hebrews, 2. reframe their minds into identity and loyalty as Babylonians to heathen gods, defiling them in the process would be a plus. After all in Scripture Satan is Babylon's Lord.

Quoting Uriah Smith The prophecies of Daniel and Revelation p-21-23 In the treatment which these Hebrew captives received, we see an instance of the wise policy and the liberality of the rising king Nebucuchadnezzar. Instead of choosing means for the gratification of low and base desires, as too many kings of latter times have done, he chose young men to be educated in all matters pertaining to the kingdom, that he might have efficent help in administering it's affairs. He appointed them daily provision of his own food and drink. Instead of the coarse fare which some would have thought good enough for captives, he offered them his own royal viands. For the space of three years they had all the advantages the kingdom afforded. Though captives they were royal children , and were treated as such by the humane king of the Chaldeans.

Daniel 1:6 Now among these were of the children of Judah, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah: 7 Unto whom the prince of the eunuchs gave names: for he gave unto Daniel the name of Belteshazzar; and to Hananiah, of Shadrach; and to Mishael, of Meshach; and to Azariah, of Abednego.

Daniel and his companions renamed. - The change of names was probably made on account of the signification of the words . In Hebrew; Daniel signified judge for God Hananiah, the gift of the Lord, Mishael, who is what God is and Azariah, whom Jehovah helps. Since these names had some reference to the true God and signified some connection with His worship, they were changed to names that had definitions linking them to the heathen divinities and worship of the Chaldeans. Thus Beleshazzar, the name given to Daniel, signified prince of Bel; Shadrach, servant of sin ( the moon god); Meshach, who is what Aku is ( Aku being the Sumerian equivalent of Sin, the name of the moon god); and Abednego, servant of Nebo. end of quote.

From Wikipedia Nebo Babylon

Nabu (in Biblical Hebrew Nebo) is the Assyrian and Babylonian god of wisdom and writing, worshipped by Babylonians as the son of Marduk and his consort, Sarpanitum, and as the grandson of Ea. Nabu's consort was Tashmetum.

Originally, Nabu was a West Semitic deity introduced by the Amorites into Mesopotamia, probably at the same time as Marduk shortly after 2000 BC.[1] While Marduk became Babylon's main deity, Nabu resided in nearby Borsippa in his temple E-zida. He was first called the "scribe and minister of Marduk", later assimilated as Marduk's beloved son from Sarpanitum. During the Babylonian New Year Festival, the cult statue of Nabu was transported from Borsippa to Babylon in order to commune with his father Marduk.

Nabu later became one of the principal gods in Assyria and Assyrians addressed many prayers and inscriptions to Nabu and named children after him. Nabu was the god of writing and scribes and was the keeper of the Tablets of Destiny, in which the fate of humankind was recorded. He was also sometimes worshiped as a fertility god and as a god of water.[1]

Nabu is accorded the office of patron of the scribes, taking over from the Sumerian goddess Nisaba. His symbols are the clay writing tablet with the writing stylus. He wears a horned cap, and stands with hands clasped, in the ancient gesture of priesthood. He rides on a winged dragon (muhuu, also known as Sirrush) that is initially Marduk's.

The etymology of his name is disputed. It could be derived from the root nb´ for "to call or announce", meaning something like "He who has called".

His power over human existence is immense, because Nabu engraves the destiny of each person, as the gods have decided, on the tablets of sacred record. Thus, He has the power to increase or diminish, at will, the length of human life.

Nabu is mentioned in the Nevi'im of the Tanakh as Nebo in Isaiah 46:1.

Looking up their story in the records of the testifying of Jesus.

"Educate yourself to have unlimited confidence in God. 75 {CSA 52.6}

Among the children of Israel who were carried captive to Babylon at the beginning of the seventy years captivity were Christian patriots, men who were as true as steel to principle, who would not be corrupted by selfishness, but who would honor God at the loss of all things. In the land of their captivity these men were to carry out Gods purpose by giving to heathen nations the blessings that come through a knowledge of Jehovah. They were to be His representatives. Never were they to compromise with idolaters; their faith and their name as worshipers of the living God they were to bear as a high honor. And this they did. In prosperity and adversity they honored God, and God honored them. {CSA 52.7}

The fact that these men, worshipers of Jehovah, were captives in Babylon, and that the vessels of Gods house had been placed in the Temple of the Babylonish gods, was boastfully cited by the victors as evidence that their religion and customs were superior to the religion and customs of the Hebrews. Yet through the very humiliations that Israels departure from Him had invited, God gave Babylon evidence of His supremacy, of the holiness of His requirements, and of the sure results of obedience. And this testimony He gave, as alone it could be given, through those who were loyal to Him. {CSA 53.1}

Among those who maintained their allegiance to God were Daniel and his three companionsillustrious examples of what men may become who unite with the God of wisdom and power. From the comparative simplicity of their Jewish home, these youth of royal line were taken to the most magnificent of cities and into the court of the worlds greatest monarch. Nebuchadnezzar spake unto Ashpenaz the master of his eunuchs, that he should bring certain of the children of Israel, and of the kings seed, and of the princes; children in whom was no blemish, but well favored, and skillful in all wisdom, and cunning in knowledge, and understanding science, and such as had ability in them to stand in the kings palace. . . . {CSA 53.2}

Now among these were of the children of Judah, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. Seeing in these youth the promise of remarkable ability, Nebuchadnezzar determined that they should be trained to fill important positions in his kingdom. That they might be fully qualified for their lifework, he arranged for them to learn the language of the Chaldeans and for three years to be granted the unusual educational advantages afforded princes of the realm. {CSA 53.3}

The names of Daniel and his companions were changed to names representing Chaldean deities. Great significance was attached to the names given by Hebrew parents to their children. Often these stood for traits of character that the parent desired to see developed in the child. The prince in whose charge the captive youth were placed, gave unto Daniel the name of Belteshazzar; and to Hananiah, of Shadrach; and to Mishael, of Meshach; and to Azariah, of Abednego.{CSA 53.4}

The king did not compel the Hebrew youth to renounce their faith in favor of idolatry, but he hoped to bring this about gradually. By giving them names significant of idolatry, by bringing them daily into close association with idolatrous customs, and under the influence of the seductive rites of heathen worship, he hoped to induce them to renounce the religion of their nation and to unite with the worship of the Babylonians. {CSA 53.5}

At the very outset of their career there came to them a decisive test of character. It was provided that they should eat of the food and drink of the wine that came from the kings table. In this the king thought to give them an expression of his favor and of his solicitude for their welfare. But a portion having been offered to idols, the food from the kings table was consecrated to idolatry; and one partaking of it would be regarded as offering homage to the gods of Babylon. In such homage, loyalty to Jehovah forbade Daniel and his companions to join. Even a mere pretense of eating the food or drinking the wine would be a denial of their faith. To do this would be to array themselves with heathenism and to dishonor the principles of the law of God. {CSA 53.6}

Nor dared they risk the enervating effect of luxury and dissipation on physical, mental, and spiritual development. They were acquainted with the history of Nadab and Abihu, the record of whose intemperance and its results had been preserved in the parchments of the Pentateuch; and they knew that their own physical and mental power would be injuriously affected by the use of wine. {CSA 54.1}

Daniel and his associates had been trained by their parents to habits of strict temperance. They had been taught that God would hold them accountable for their capabilities, and that they must never dwarf or enfeeble their powers. This education was to Daniel and his companions the means of their preservation amidst the demoralizing influences of the court of Babylon. Strong were the temptations surrounding them in that corrupt and luxurious court, but they remained uncontaminated. No power, no influence, could sway them from the principles they had learned in early life by a study of the word and works of God. {CSA 54.2}

Had Daniel so desired, he might have found in his surroundings a plausible excuse for departing from strictly temperate habits. He might have argued that, dependent as he was on the kings favor and subject to his power, there was no other course for him to pursue than to eat of the kings food and drink of his wine; for should he adhere to the divine teaching, he would offend the king and probably lose his position and his life. Should he disregard the commandment of the Lord he would retain the favor of the king and secure for himself intellectual advantages and flattering worldly prospects. {CSA 54.3}

But Daniel did not hesitate. The approval of God was dearer to him than the favor of the most powerful earthly potentatedearer than life itself. He determined to stand firm in his integrity, let the result be what it might. He purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the kings meat, nor with the wine which he drank. And in this resolve he was supported by his three companions. {CSA 54.4}

Satan claims a right to have those who once stood under his black banner, but who have turned from sin to the living God and have cast their helpless souls upon Jesus. All who take hold of the merits of Christ by faith have the pledged word of God that they shall make peace with Him. . . . {CTr 186.2}

Trials are permitted to come upon the chosen people of God. The expressions are used, God tempted Abraham,God tempted the children of Israel. This means that the Lord permitted Satan to tempt them in order that their faith might be found unto honor and glory when the judgment shall sit, and when every person shall be judged according to the deeds done in the body. God knows every heart, every motive, every thought in the heart; but He permits Satan to try and tempt and test His believing ones in order that their trust and confidence in God may be revealed. . . . {CTr 186.3}

The Lord hates sin; but He loves and forgives the repentant, believing sinner, and takes everyone under His guardianship and control. Satan is on the track of every soul, but with every temptation that is permitted to come upon the children of Gods pardoning love, He makes a way of escape in order that they shall not be tempted above that which they are able to bear. . . . {CTr 186.4}

And he shewed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the Lord, and Satan standing at his right hand to resist him. The work of Satan is plainly defined as that of resisting the meritorious work of Christ. . . . When Christ steps in between the tempted souls and Satan, the adversary is angry and opens up with a tirade of abuse and accusation, declaring that Christ is unfair in protecting these souls, and in lifting up a standard against him. . . . {CTr 186.5}

In the presence of the unfallen worlds, in the presence of the universe of heaven, in the presence of the angry adversary who has painted them in robes of blackness and moral defilement, urging that they be given into his hands, Jesus answered Satans malignant charge whereby he accused them before God day and night. To those who stood before Him, earnestly watching the controversy and marking the determination of Satan to destroy the righteous, Jesus spoke, saying, Take away the filthy garments from him. And unto him he said, Behold, I have caused thine iniquity to pass from thee, and I will clothe thee with change of raiment.Manuscript 27, 1894. {CTr 186.6}

All Heaven Hears Our Praise And Thanks Giving To God

Then they that feared the Lord spake often one to another: and the Lord hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared the Lord, and that thought upon his name. Malachi 3:16. {CTr 187.1}

Two classes of witnesses are presented in the prophets [Malachis] words. Of the first class it is written, Your words have been stout against me, saith the Lord. . . . Ye have said, It is vain to serve God: and what profit is it that we have kept his ordinance, and that we have walked mournfully before the Lord of hosts? These words describe those who ought to have better represented the precious truth, who ought to have been an example to those newly come to the faith. For all who follow Him the Lord has prepared a rich feast of heavenly things. He has ordained that those who follow Him shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. . . . The Lord does not call upon His believing, obedient followers to cover the altar with tears, but to walk cheerfully and happily along. . . . {CTr 187.2}

Malachi turns away from the dark picture that Satan presents to these professed followers of Jesus Christ, for it is a libel on the paternal character of God. Satan has framed this picture for the contemplation of poor, unbelieving, mourning souls, and they have hung it up in memorys hall where they can gaze upon it. But the Lord has presented another picture for the contemplation of every believer. Then they that feared the Lord spake often one to another: and the Lord hearkened. . . . {CTr 187.3}

Do the believers who meet in their small assemblies in humble churches or in private houses often look upon this picture framed by the Lord of hosts? . . . What a hope-inspiring picture is this where the Lord is represented as bending down and hearkening to the testimonies borne by His witnesses! What inspiration it should give us to consider the fact that all the heavenly universe is represented as listening with pleasure to the words that are spoken exalting the name of God in the earth. . . . {CTr 187.4}

The words to which God and the angels listen with delight are words of appreciation for the great Gift that has been made to the world in the only begotten Son of God. Every word of praise for the blessing of the light of truth that has come in messages of warning, and that has dispelled the darkness of error, is written in the heavenly records.Manuscript 32, 1894. {CTr 187.5}

 "Then the queen-mother remembered Daniel, who, so many years before, had made known to king Nebuchadnezzar his forgotten dream and its interpretation. Standing before that gorgeous, terror-stricken throng, the prophet of God reminded the king of Nebuchadnezzar's sin and fall, and reproved him for his own crimes. Then turning to the writing on the wall, he read the message from Heaven. The hand was gone, but four terrible words were left. With bated breath the people waited as Daniel announced their meaning: Mene, Mene, Tekel, Upharsin: God hath numbered thy kingdom, and finished it; thou art weighed in the balances, and art found wanting; thy kingdom is divided, and given to the Medes and Persians. [Daniel 5:25-28.]  {CTBH 21.1}

     Just as surely as there was a Witness at the feast of Belshazzar, there is also a Witness in every scene of sacrilegious mirth, and just as surely is the recording angel writing, Thou art weighed in the balances, and art found wanting.  {CTBH 21.2}

     Intemperance is on the increase, in spite of the efforts made to control it. We cannot be too earnest in seeking to hinder its progress, to raise the fallen, and shield the weak from temptation. With our feeble human hands we can do but little, but we have an unfailing Helper. We must not forget that the arm of Christ can reach to the very depths of human woe and degradation. He can give us help to conquer even this terrible demon of intemperance.  {CTBH 21.3}

     But it is in the home that the real work must begin. The greatest burden rests upon those who have the responsibility of educating the youth, of forming their character. Here is a work for mothers, in helping their children to form correct habits and pure tastes, to develop moral stamina, true moral worth. Teach them that they are not to be swayed by others, that they are not to yield to wrong influences, but to influence others for good, to ennoble and elevate those with whom they associate. Teach them that if they connect themselves with God, they will have strength from him to resist the fiercest temptations.  {CTBH 21.4}

     In the Babylonian court, Daniel was surrounded by allurements to sin, but by the help of Christ he maintained his integrity. He who cannot resist temptation, with every facility which has been placed within his reach, is not registered in the books of heaven as a man. The Lord never places men in positions so trying that it is beyond their power to withstand evil. Divine power is ever ready to protect and strengthen him who has been made a partaker of the divine nature.  {CTBH 22.1}

     Temptations to the indulgence of appetite possess a power which can be overcome only by the help that God can impart. But with every temptation we have the promise of God that there shall be a way of escape. Why, then, are so many overcome? It is because they do not put their trust in God. They do not avail themselves of the means provided for their safety. The excuses offered for the gratification of perverted appetite, are therefore of no weight with God.  {CTBH 22.2}

     Daniel valued his human capabilities, but he did not trust in them. His trust was in that strength which God has promised to all who will come to him in humble dependence, relying wholly upon his power.  {CTBH 22.3}
     He purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king's meat, nor with the wine which he drank; for he knew that such a diet would not strengthen his physical powers or increase his mental capability. He would not use wine, nor any other unnatural stimulant; he would do nothing to becloud his mind; and God gave him knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom, and also understanding in all visions and dreams. [Daniel 1:17.]  {CTBH 22.4}

"The lips of the righteous feed many. Proverbs 10:21.  {CC 9.1}

     Notwithstanding the prevailing iniquity, there was a line of holy men who, elevated and ennobled by communion with God, lived as in the companionship of heaven. They were men of massive intellect, of wonderful attainments. They had a great and holy mission--to develop a character of righteousness, to teach a lesson of godliness, not only to the men of their time, but for future generations. Only a few of the most prominent are mentioned in the Scriptures; but all through the ages God had faithful witnesses, truehearted worshipers.  {CC 9.2}

     How often those who trusted the word of God, though in themselves utterly helpless, have withstood the power of the whole world--Enoch, pure in heart, holy in life, holding fast his faith in the triumph of righteousness against a corrupt and scoffing generation; Noah and his household against the men of his time, men of the greatest physical and mental strength and the most debased in morals; the children of Israel at the Red Sea, a helpless, terrified multitude of slaves, against the mightiest army of the mightiest nation on the globe; David, a shepherd lad, having God's promise of the throne, against Saul, the established monarch, bent on holding fast his power; Shadrach and his companions in the fire, and Nebuchadnezzar on the throne; Daniel among the lions, his enemies in the high places of the kingdom; Jesus on the cross, and the Jewish priests and rulers forcing even the Roman governor to work their will; Paul in chains led to a criminal's death, Nero the despot of a world empire.  {CC 9.3}

     Such examples are not found in the Bible only. They abound in every record of human progress. The Vaudois and the Huguenots, Wycliffe and Huss, Jerome and Luther, Tyndale and Knox, Zinzendorf and Wesley, with multitudes of others have witnessed to the power of God's word against human power and policy in support of evil. These are the world's true nobility. This is its royal line. In this line the youth of today are called to take their places.  {CC 9.4}
