One of the most troubling things right now is the way in which conservative Adventism is abandoning even the pretense of education. In that respect, the closing of Weimar College is an ominous sign. In some parts of the church three months or six months evangelistic training is considered enough to qualify for ministry.

Thats a dramatic and painful departure from Ellen Whites educational vision, a vision illustrated by her characterization of John Wycliffe, a man of deep religious conviction who sought to become acquainted with every branch of learning (GC 80).

Sister,
Things have gone astray a long time ago. The original model worked great but it was discarded and most of the institutions now compete with the world. Things are not as they should be....

Spectrum is of course a sounding board for those who aren't strong believers in the Bible or SOP, but where they have salient points, we should listen to them.  And here they do have a good point.  Conservatives like to rail out against the problems and backslidings in the SDA-organization-run schools, but are very reluctant to start their own schools.  It's easier to sit on the sidelines and moan rather than being proactive to fix the problem.

One thing tho, is that it is getting harder and harder to get permission to have any kind of school without the State telling you what and how to run your school.  If you want to get a degree, you must follow someone else's rules - not God's.

Here in SE Asia, there is only one SDA-run school - Mission College in Thailand, (where i'm planning to go as soon as i finish typing this), and it is very backslidden.  I know quite a few people who are upset about it, and i know one who is laying plans to start his own Bible-training school soon, and even i'm hoping to help those here in Thailand start some kind of training school for little kids up to young adults.

Let's be about our Master's service, and stop grasping for degrees of this world that will soon pass away.

Thank you newbie and webmaster for your comments.

I pray that God will bless your efforts in education webmaster.

I hope that I am not grasping after degrees. I am married and I believe that I am doing what is appropriate for my situation. My husband is employed in an Adventist university. I am on a dependent visa which means I am not allowed to be employed. I believe studying is a productive way to spend my time. Yes, the university is backslidden in many ways but we don't live in a perfect world. I am studying theology, history and English. I am especially enjoying learning Greek in order to read the New Testament in the original language.

It is good and proper to try to develop all your powers to the utmost - only in God.  And that is where i:m concerned for you.  Studying Greek is excellent, and history is fine, but......
If error is being taught in the theology department, then you are on shifting sand.

I:m not sure what school you are attending, but nearly all the SDA universities in know of, hire professors who have gotten their degrees from Sunday-church places.  So they teach Sunday-church doctrines.  So God:s people get weaker and weaker.  Why, did you know that even our General Conference president got one of his degrees from the same Jesuit school (started as a Protestant school but got corrupted) that the pope went to?  It is no wonder that they speak nearly the same language.

Did you know that after Battle Creek College, the very first SDA school of higher education was open for a few years, that Ellen White was advising parents NOT to send their children there?  Just because it is SDA does not make it right.

"but we don't live in a perfect world"  This worries me very much Sister.  Does this sound anything like what Jesus said?  Or did he shun the rabbi:s schools and spend time with the Word of God?
