One effort more, and then Satans last device is employed. He hears the unceasing cry for Christ to come, for Christ to deliver them. This last strategy is to personate Christ and make them think their prayers are answered. But this answers to the last closing work, the abomination of desolation standing in the holy place. [Text ends here.]. 4LtMs, Ms 16, 1884, par. 11

Satan will continue to act a double part. Appearing to be the dispenser of great blessings and divine truths, he will, by his lying wonders, hold the world under his control; and at the same time he will indulge his malignity by causing distress and destruction, and will accuse God's people as the cause of the fearful convulsions of nature and the strife and bloodshed among men which are desolating the earth. Thus he will excite to greater intensity the spirit of hatred and persecution against them. 4SP 444.1

The coming of the bridegroom was at midnight -- the darkest hour.  So the coming of Christ will take place in the darkest period of this earth's history.  The days of Noah and Lot pictured the condition of the world just before the coming of the Son of man.  The Scriptures pointing forward to this time declare that Satan will work with all power and "with all deceivableness of unrighteousness."  2 Thessalonians 2:9, 10.  His working is plainly revealed by the rapidly increasing darkness, the multitudinous errors, heresies, and delusions of these last days.  Not only is Satan leading the world captive, but his deceptions are leavening the professed churches of our Lord Jesus Christ.  The great apostasy will develop into darkness deep as midnight, impenetrable as sackcloth of hair.  To God's people it will be a night of trial, a night of weeping, a night of persecution for the truth's sake.  But out of that night of darkness God's light will shine.  {COL 414.3}

By the decree enforcing the institution of the papacy in violation of the law of God, our nation will disconnect herself fully from righteousness. When Protestantism shall stretch her hand across the gulf to grasp the hand of the Roman power, when she shall reach over the abyss to clasp hands with spiritualism, when, under the influence of this threefold union, our country shall repudiate every principle of its Constitution as a Protestant and republican government, and shall make provision for the propagation of papal falsehoods and delusions, then we may know that the time has come for the marvelous working of Satan and that the end is near.

As the approach of the Roman armies was a sign to the disciples of the impending destruction of Jerusalem, so may this apostasy be a sign to us that the limit of God's forbearance is reached, that the measure of our nation's iniquity is full, and that the angel of mercy is about to take her flight, never to return. The people of God will then be plunged into those scenes of affliction and distress which prophets have described as the time of Jacob's trouble. The cries of the faithful, persecuted ones ascend to heaven. And as the blood of Abel cried from the ground, there are voices also crying to God from martyrs graves, from the sepulchers of the sea, from mountain caverns, from convent vaults: How long, O Lord, holy and true, dost Thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth?  . 5T 451.1-5T 451.2

They declared that they had the truth, that miracles were among them; that angels from heaven talked with them and walked with them, that great power and signs and wonders were performed among them, and that this was the temporal millennium they had been expecting so long. The whole world was converted and in harmony with the sunday law, and this little feeble people stood out in defiance of the laws of the land and the law of God, and claimed to be the only ones right on the earth.

They declared, The angels from heaven have spoken to us, Referring to those whom Satan personated that had died and they claimed had gone to heaven. You will bear the testimony of the heavenly messengers. They sneered, they mocked, they derided and abused the sorrowing ones. There was much more but I have not time to write it.  . 2MR 208.1-2MR 208.2

Satan sees that he is about to lose his case. He cannot sweep in the whole world. He makes one last desperate effort to overcome the faithful by deception. He does this in personating Christ. He clothes himself with the garments of royalty which have been accurately described in the vision of John. He has power to do this. He will appear to his deluded followers, the Christian world who received not the love of the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness (transgression of the law), as Christ coming the second time. . It is true that spiritualism is now changing its form and, veiling some of its more objectionable features, is assuming a Christian guise.  But its utterances from the platform and the press have been before the public for many years, and in these its real character stands revealed.  These teachings cannot be denied or hidden.  {GC 557.2}

Even in its present form, so far from being more worthy of toleration than formerly, it is really a more dangerous, because a more subtle, deception.  While it formerly denounced Christ and the Bible, it now professes to accept both.  But the Bible is interpreted in a manner that is pleasing to the unrenewed heart, while its solemn and vital truths are made of no effect.  Love is dwelt upon as the chief attribute of God, but it is degraded to a weak sentimentalism, making little distinction between good and evil.  God's justice, His denunciations of sin, the requirements of His holy law, are all kept out of sight.  The people are taught to regard the Decalogue as a dead letter.  Pleasing, bewitching fables captivate the senses and lead men to reject the Bible as the foundation of their faith.  Christ is as verily denied as before; but Satan has so blinded the eyes of the people that the deception is not discerned.  {GC 558.1}

Rebellion against God's holy law will be fully ripe. But the true leader of all this rebellion is Satan clothed as an angel of light. Men will be deceived and will exalt him to the place of God, and deify him. But Omnipotence will interpose, and to the apostate churches that unite in the exaltation of Satan, the sentence will go forth, Therefore shall her plagues come in one day, death, and mourning, and famine; and she shall be utterly burned with fire: for strong is the Lord God who judgeth her.

Disguised as an angel of light, he [Satan] will walk the earth as a wonder-worker. In beautiful language he will present lofty sentiments. Good words will be spoken by him, and good deeds performed. Christ will be personified, but on one point there will be a marked distinction. Satan will turn the people from the law of God. Mar 205.2-Mar 205.3

Satan is determined to keep up the warfare to the end. Coming as an angel of light, claiming to be the Christ, he will deceive the world. But his triumph will be short. No storm or tempest can move those whose feet are planted on the principles of eternal truth. They will be able to stand in this time of almost universal apostasy. Mar 206.8

Satan knows that his time is short, and he is putting forth every effort in his power to destroy our faith in God and in his Word.  His agencies are following us constantly, seeking to induce us to follow his plans, and to take a wrong course in word and deed.  But if we will grasp the power that Christ offers, seeking the Lord diligently, and watching unto prayer, we shall have all power and wisdom to meet the attacks of the enemy.  {RH, July 16, 1908 par. 5}

When he (Jesus) leaves the sanctuary, darkness covers the inhabitants of the earth. In that fearful time the righteous must live in the sight of a holy God without an intercessor. The restraint which has been upon the wicked is removed, and Satan has entire control of the finally impenitent. The power attending the last warning has enraged them, and their anger is kindled against all who have received the message. The people of God are then plunged into those scenes of affliction and distress described by the prophet as the time of Jacob's trouble: . 4SP 432.1

With pity and compassion, with tender yearning, the Lord is looking upon His tempted and tried people.  For a time the oppressors will be permitted to triumph over those who know God's holy commandments.  All are given the same opportunity that was granted to the first great rebel to demonstrate the spirit that moves them to action.  It is God's purpose that every one shall be tested and proved, to see whether he will be loyal or disloyal to the laws which govern the kingdom of heaven.  To the last God permits Satan to reveal his character as a liar, an accuser, and a murderer.  Thus the final trial of His people is made more marked, more glorious, more full and complete.  The words of the prophet will then be fulfilled, "The day of vengeance is in mine heart, and the year of my redeemed is come" [Isaiah 63:4].  The song of God's people will be, "The Lord reigneth; let the people tremble:  He sitteth between the cherubims; let the earth be moved.  The Lord is great in Zion; and He is high above all the people" [Psalms 99:1, 2].  {13MR 330.1}

As the crowning act in the great drama of deception, Satan himself will attempt to personate Christ. The church has long professed to look to the Saviour's advent as the consummation of her hopes. Now the great deceiver will make it appear that Christ has come.

In different parts of the earth, Satan will manifest himself among men as a majestic being of dazzling brightness, resembling the description of the Son of God given by John in the Revelation. [Revelation 1:13-15.] The glory that surrounds him is unsurpassed by anything that mortal eyes have yet beheld. The shout of triumph rings out upon the air, Christ has come! Christ has come! The people prostrate themselves in adoration before him, while he lifts up his hands, and pronounces a blessing upon them, as Christ blessed his disciples when he was personally upon the earth. His voice is soft and subdued, yet full of melody.

In gentle, compassionate tones he presents some of the same gracious, heavenly truths which the Saviour uttered; he heals the diseases of the people, and then, in his assumed character of Christ, he claims to have changed the Sabbath to Sunday, and commands all to hallow the day which he has blessed. He declares that those who persist in keeping holy the seventh day are blaspheming his name  by refusing to listen to his angels sent to them with light and truth. This is the strong, almost overmastering delusion. Like the Samaritans who were deceived by Simon Magus, the multitudes, from the least to the greatest, give heed to these sorceries, saying, This is the great power of God.  . 4SP 442.1

In this state of darkness, they had attempted the conflict with Satan.

In order to succeed in such a conflict, their faith must be strengthened by earnest prayer, fasting, and humiliation of heart. They must be emptied of self and be filled with the Spirit and power of God. Only faith that leads to entire dependence on God and unreserved dedication to His work can bring the Holy Spirits aid in the battle against wicked spirits. . 3TC 281.2-3TC 281.3

Satan is a diligent Bible student.  He knows that his time is short, and he seeks at every point to counterwork the work of the Lord upon this earth.  It is impossible to give any idea of the experience of the people of God who shall be alive upon the earth when celestial glory and a repetition of the persecutions of the past are blended.  They will walk in the light proceeding from the throne of God.  By means of the angels there will be constant communication between heaven and earth.  And Satan, surrounded by evil angels, and claiming to be God, will work miracles of all kinds, to deceive, if possible, the very elect.  God's people will not find their safety in working miracles, for Satan will counterfeit the miracles that will be wrought.  God's tried and tested people will find their power in the sign spoken of in Exodus 31:12-18.  They are to take their stand on the living word:  "It is written."  This is the only foundation upon which they can stand securely.  Those who have broken their covenant with God will in that day be without God and without hope.  {9T 16.1}
