A mere profession of Christ is not enough to prepare one to stand the test of the Judgment.  True conversion is a radical change.  The very drift of the mind and bent of the heart should be turned, and the life should become new in Christ.  There should be a perfect trust in God, a childlike dependence on his promises, and an entire consecration of self to his will, remembering that the observance of mere external forms will never meet the great want of the human soul.  We are Christ's representatives on the earth, and none of us can occupy a neutral position.  We are active agents for God or for the enemy.  We either gather with Christ or scatter abroad.  "Beloved, now are we the sons of God," says the apostle.  We should keep in mind this holy relationship, and do nothing to bring dishonor upon our Father's cause.  {BEcho, September 1, 1888 par. 3}

True conversion is needed.

Jeremiah 9:24

But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me, that I am the Lord which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith the Lord.

You must make a daily, personal consecration of all to God, You must daily renew your covenant to be His wholly and forever.  Place no dependence upon changeable feelings, but plant your feet upon the sure platform of the promises of God: Thou hast said it; I believe the promise.  This is an intelligent faith.  {OHC 124.4}

(N). Jeremiah 7:23

But this thing commanded I them, saying, Obey my voice, and I will be your God, and ye shall be my people: and walk ye in all the ways that I have commanded you, that it may be well unto you.

In the courts above, Christ is pleading for His church -- pleading for those for whom He has paid the redemption price of His blood.  Centuries, ages, can never lessen the efficacy of His atoning sacrifice.  Neither life nor death, height nor depth, can separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus; not because we hold Him so firmly, but because He holds us so fast.  If our salvation depended on our own efforts, we could not be saved; but it depends on the One who is behind all the promises.  Our grasp on Him may seem feeble, but His love is that of an elder brother; so long as we maintain our union with Him, no one can pluck us out of His hand.  {AA 552.2}

Jeremiah 15:16

Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart: for I am called by thy name, O Lord God of hosts.

Every promise in the Word of God is for us.  In your prayers, present the pledged word of Jehovah, and by faith claim His promises.  His word is the assurance that if you ask in faith, you will receive all spiritual blessings.  Continue to ask, and you will receive exceeding abundantly above all that you ask or think.  Educate yourself to have unlimited confidence in God.  Cast all your care upon Him.  Wait patiently for Him, and He will bring it to pass.  {ST, November 18, 1903 par. 4}

"Thy words were found, and I did eat them;"

That's one of my favorite parts of the Bible, actually.

That verse helped strengthen my faith several years ago when there were many fellow SDAs telling me I was foolish for believing that the words in the Bible are from God. smile

It is proper that you should feel your weakness and soul's great need, and it is at this very time that you may come to God in full assurance of faith, claiming the promise that the weary and the heavy laden shall find rest unto their souls.  The boldness is confidence in God, not self-confidence.  But all rashness, all irreverence, is to be far from those who would offer acceptable prayer.  Then we may heed the words of one who speaks for God, when he says, "And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask anything according to his will, he heareth us."  {RH, May 28, 1895 par. 7}

Seek the Lord with all your heart.  Come with zeal, and when you sincerely feel that without the help of God you perish, when you pant after Him as the hart panteth after the water brooks, then will the Lord strengthen you speedily.  Then will your peace pass all understanding.  If you expect salvation, you must pray.  Take time.  Be not hurried and careless in your prayers.  Beg of God to work in you a thorough reformation, that the fruits of His Spirit may dwell in you, and you shine as lights in the world.  Be not a hindrance or curse to the cause of God; you can be a help, a blessing.  Does Satan tell you that you cannot enjoy salvation full and free?  Believe him not.  {Mar 69.4}

The troubles of this present time are diversified in form, but Christ has passed over the ground, and we need not be in uncertainty.  He has invited us, "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.  Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.  For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light" (Matthew 11:28-30).  The promise is, "I will be with him in trouble" (Psalm 91:15).  {TDG 54.4}

Christ has given us no promise of help in bearing today the burdens of tomorrow.  He has said, "My grace is sufficient for thee" (2 Corinthians 12:9); but, like the manna given in the wilderness, His grace is bestowed daily, for the day's need.  Like the hosts of Israel in their pilgrim life, we may find morning by morning the bread of heaven for the day's supply.  {MB 101.1}

One day alone is ours, and during this day we are to live for God.  For this one day we are to place in the hand of Christ, in solemn service, all our purposes and plans, casting all our care upon Him, for He careth for us.  "I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end."  "In returning and rest shall ye be saved; in quietness and in confidence shall be your strength."  Jeremiah 29:11; Isaiah 30:15.  {MB 101.2}

John, who leaned upon the bosom of Christ, says, "We have known and believed the love that God hath to us."  If we can individually say this from the heart, we are indeed rich in faith, living on the promises of God.  Amid our trials, disappointments, bereavements, and afflictions, we are to learn that God is love, and that he that dwelleth in God, dwelleth in love.  "Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment; because as he is, so are we in this world."  We have reason ever to thank God that he knows all the storms, disappointments, and trials that come upon his people.  He follows them through every experience, with tender, pitying love, and expresses his desire to heal our wounds, and restore unto us the joy of his salvation.  {ST, August 28, 1893 par. 7}

Live by the day for Christ.  Seek to be a victor just for this one day; for you do not know that you have another day to live.  Confess your sins today.  You have the promises of pardon.  {RH, August 18, 1891 par. 10}

Many of the promises are conditional. One of the conditions is to confess and repent.

 He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal.

The promise of the Holy Spirit is not limited to any age or to any race.  Christ declared that the divine influence of His Spirit was to be with His followers unto the end.  From the Day of Pentecost to the present time, the Comforter has been sent to all who have yielded themselves fully to the Lord and to His service.  To all who have accepted Christ as a personal Saviour, the Holy Spirit has come as a counselor, sanctifier, guide, and witness.  The more closely believers have walked with God, the more clearly and powerfully have they testified of their Redeemer's love and of His saving grace.  The men and women who through the long centuries of persecution and trial enjoyed a large measure of the presence of the Spirit in their lives, have stood as signs and wonders in the world.  Before angels and men they have revealed the transforming power of redeeming love.  {AA 49.2}

There are precious promises in the Scriptures to those who wait upon the Lord.  We all desire an immediate answer to our prayers, and we are tempted to become discouraged if our prayer is not immediately answered.  Now my experience has taught me that this is a great mistake.  The delay is for our special benefit.  Our faith has a chance to be tested to see whether it is true, sincere, or changeable like the waves of the sea.  We must bind ourselves upon the altar with the strong cords of faith and love, and let patience have her perfect work.  Faith strengthens through continual exercise.  {OHC 134.2}

Wait upon the Lord.

(N). 2 Corinthians 13:11

Finally, brethren, farewell. Be perfect, be of good comfort, be of one mind, live in peace; and the God of love and peace shall be with you.

We all desire immediate and direct answers to our prayers, and are tempted to become discouraged when the answer is delayed or comes in an unlooked-for form.  But God is too wise and good to answer our prayers always at just the time and in just the manner we desire.  He will do more and better for us than to accomplish all our wishes.  And because we can trust His wisdom and love, we should not ask Him to concede to our will, but should seek to enter into and accomplish His purpose.  Our desires and interests should be lost in His will.  These experiences that test faith are for our benefit.  By them it is made manifest whether our faith is true and sincere, resting on the word of God alone, or whether depending on circumstances, it is uncertain and changeable.  Faith is strengthened by exercise.  We must let patience have its perfect work, remembering that there are precious promises in the Scriptures for those who wait upon the Lord.  {MH 230.4}

Test of faith for our benefit

"For the Lord is a sun and shield: the Lord will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly."  "O fear the Lord, ye his saints: for there is no want to them that fear him" ... "The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit."  Here are promises, rich and abundant, upon condition that you cease to do evil and learn to do well.  Then set your aim in life high, as did Joseph and Daniel and Moses; and take into consideration the cost of character-building, and then build for time and eternity.  {LHU 129.3}
