It is true that there may be an outward correctness of deportment without the renewing power of Christ.  The love of influence and the desire for the esteem of others may produce a well-ordered life.  Self-respect may lead us to avoid the appearance of evil.  A selfish heart may perform generous actions.  By what means, then, shall we determine whose side we are on?  {SC 58.1}

Who has the heart?  With whom are our thoughts?  Of whom do we love to converse?  Who has our warmest affections and our best energies?  If we are Christ's, our thoughts are with Him, and our sweetest thoughts are of Him.  All we have and are is consecrated to Him.  We long to bear His image, breathe His spirit, do His will, and please Him in all things.  {SC 58.2}

 "Abide in me, and I in you."  How are we to abide in Christ?  By a daily, hourly faith.  We are not safe in any other position.  A man may have his name on the church books, and make a high profession, but this avails nothing unless he has a living connection with Christ, unless his spirit, his words, his deportment, his business transactions with believers and unbelievers, reveal the virtues that come from such a union.  A man who is thus united with Christ has a living faith, which takes hold upon divine power; and he is enabled to escape the corruption that is in the world through lust.  {PC 314.5}

Men may turn from one doctrine to another, and yet know nothing of the meaning of the words, "A new heart also will I give you."  Accepting new theories merely does not bring new life into the soul, even though the church that is entered may be established on the true foundation.  A connection with the church does not take the place of conversion.  To have one's name placed on the church roll is not of the least value unless the heart is truly changed.  {RH, March 29, 1906 par. 4}

Mark 10

[18] And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is , God.

Public opinion favors a profession of Christianity.  Little self-denial or self-sacrifice is required in order to put on a form of godliness and to have one's name enrolled upon the church book.  Hence many join the church without first becoming united to Christ.  In this Satan triumphs.  Such converts are his most efficient agents.  They serve as decoys to other souls.  They are false lights, luring the unwary to perdition.  It is in vain that men seek to make the Christian's path broad and pleasant for worldlings. God has not smoothed or widened the rugged, narrow way.  If we would enter into life, we must follow the same path which Jesus and His disciples trod -- the path of humility, self-denial, and sacrifice.  {5T 172.2}

The impenitent sometimes excuse themselves by saying of professed Christians, "I am as good as they are.  They are no more self-denying, sober, or circumspect in their conduct than I am.  They love pleasure and self-indulgence as well as I do."  Thus they make the faults of others an excuse for their own neglect of duty.  But the sins and defects of others do not excuse anyone, for the Lord has not given us an erring human pattern.  The spotless Son of God has been given as our example, and those who complain of the wrong course of professed Christians are the ones who should show better lives and nobler examples.  If they have so high a conception of what a Christian should be, is not their own sin so much the greater?  They know what is right, and yet refuse to do it.  {SC 32.1}
