Many hold faith as an opinion.  Saving faith is a transaction, by which those who receive Christ join themselves in covenant relation with God.  A living faith means an increase of vigor, a confiding trust, by which, through the grace of Christ, the soul becomes a conquering power.  {MH 62.2}

"Abide in me, and I in you."  How are we to abide in Christ?  By a daily, hourly faith.  We are not safe in any other position.  A man may have his name on the church books, and make a high profession, but this avails nothing unless he has a living connection with Christ, unless his spirit, his words, his deportment, his business transactions with believers and unbelievers, reveal the virtues that come from such a union.  A man who is thus united with Christ has a living faith, which takes hold upon divine power; and he is enabled to escape the corruption that is in the world through lust.  {PC 314.5}

To talk of religion in a casual way, to pray without soul hunger and living faith, avails nothing.  A nominal faith in Christ, which accepts Him merely as the Saviour of the world, can never bring healing to the soul.  The faith that is unto salvation is not a mere intellectual assent to the truth.  He who waits for entire knowledge before he will exercise faith, cannot receive blessing from God.  It is not enough to believe about Christ; we must believe in Him.  The only faith that will benefit us is that which embraces Him as a personal Saviour; which appropriates His merits to ourselves.  Many hold faith as an opinion.  Saving faith is a transaction by which those who receive Christ join themselves in covenant relation with God.  Genuine faith is life.  A living faith means an increase of vigor, a confiding trust, by which the soul becomes a conquering power.  {DA 347.1}

Faith is believing without seeing God. But we can have evidence of faith which helps grow our faith.

To talk of religious things in a casual way, to pray for spiritual blessings without real soul hunger and living faith, avails little.  The wondering crowd that pressed close about Christ realized no vital power from the contact.  But when the poor, suffering woman, in her great need, put forth her hand and touched the hem of Jesus' garment, she felt the healing virtue.  Hers was the touch of faith.  Christ recognized that touch, and He determined there to give a lesson for all His followers to the close of time.  He knew that virtue had gone out of Him, and turning about in the throng He said: "Who touched My clothes?"  Surprised at such a question His disciples answered: "Thou seest the multitude thronging Thee, and sayest thou, Who touched Me?"  {5T 227.4} 

Jesus fixed His eyes upon her who had done this.  She was filled with fear.  Great joy was hers, but had she overstepped her duty?  Knowing what was done in her, she came trembling and fell at His feet and told Him all the truth.  Christ did not reproach her.  He gently said: "Go in peace, and be whole of thy plague."  {5T 228.1} 

Here was distinguished the casual contact from the touch of faith.  Prayer and preaching, without the exercise of living faith in God, will be in vain.  But the touch of faith opens to us the divine treasure house of power and wisdom; and thus, through instruments of clay, God accomplishes the wonders of His grace.  {5T 228.2} 

This living faith is our great need today.  We must know that Jesus is indeed ours, that His spirit is purifying and refining our hearts.  If the ministers of Christ had genuine faith, with meekness and love, what a work they might accomplish!  What fruit would be seen to the glory of God!  {5T 228.3}

"If we overcome our trials, and get victory over the temptations of

Satan, then we endure the trial of our faith, which is much more

precious than gold, and are stronger, and better prepared to meet the

next. But if we sink down, and give way to the temptations of Satan, we

shall grow weaker and get no reward for the trial, and shall not be so

well prepared for the next. In this way we shall grow weaker, and

weaker, until we are led captive by Satan, at his will. We must have on

the whole armor of God, and be ready at any moment for a conflict with

the powers of darkness. When temptations and trials rush in upon us,

let us go to God, and agonize with him in prayer. He will not turn us

While our salvation is wholly dependent upon Jesus, yet we have a work to do in order that we shall be saved.  The apostle says, "Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure."  The work that we are to do is not independent of what God is to do, but a work of cooperation with God.  The power and the grace of God is to be wrought into the heart by the divine Worker, but some go astray here, claiming that man has a work to do that is wholly independent of any work of God.  Another class take the other extreme, and say that man is free from all obligation, because God does the whole work -- both the willing and doing.  But the true ground to take is that the human will must be in subjection to the divine will.  The will of man is not to be forced into cooperation with divine agencies, but must be voluntarily submitted.  Man has no power of himself to work out his own salvation.  Salvation must be the result of cooperation with divine power, and God will not do that for man which he can do for himself.  Man is wholly dependent on the grace of Christ.  He has no power to move one step in the direction of Christ unless the Spirit of God draws him.  The Holy Spirit is continually drawing the soul, and will continue to draw until by persistent refusal the sinner grieves away the tender messenger of God.  {ST, February 12, 1894 par. 2}

There are two grand forces at work in the salvation of the human soul.  It requires the cooperation of man with the divine agencies -- divine influences, and a strong, living, working faith.  It is in this way only that the human agent can become a laborer together with God.  The Lord does not sanction in any one of us a blind, stupid credulity.  He does not dishonor the human understanding, but, far from this, He calls for the human will to be brought into connection with the divine will.  He calls for the ingenuity of the human mind, the tact, the skill, to be strenuously exercised in searching out the truth as it is in Jesus ... Ye are labourers together with God.  {OHC 310.5}

"The Lord hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth."  Here, according to the appointment of God, are the two agencies in man's salvation, -- the divine influences, and a strong, living, working faith, a faith that receives the truth.  God requires no man to cast aside his reason, and yield to the control of blind credulity.  But we are to search the Scriptures in the spirit of learners.  In the meekness of Christ canvas every point of difference.  Search for the truth as for hidden treasures.  It will not do to ignore these questions of vital interest.  Human assertions are as valueless as straw.  Many will miss the path to heaven because they rest their faith upon men.  They resist the message of mercy because some one in whom they have confidence is indifferent to it.  But the soul is of too great value to rest its faith on man.  No one but Christ can ransom the soul.  We have the word of God, and this alone can we trust unwaveringly.  Let brethren seek God together.  Let them fall upon the Rock and be broken. "Ye are laborers together with God."  We must understand the obligations imposed upon us by this co-operation, or we shall never stand approved in the Judgment.  Laborers together with God means fellow-laborers with those of our own fallen race, but cooperating with divine agencies.  It is the work of salvation to accomplish this union of the human with the divine.  {PC 154.2}

Our safety lies not only in professing the truth but in living the truth out.  Daily, hourly, momentarily, we need that genuine faith that works by love and purifies the soul.  Unless as individuals we are imbued with the Holy Spirit of God, we shall surely be led astray by some of Satan's specious devices.  Our only course of safety is to walk humbly with God, to watch most earnestly lest selfishness, lest some sin we do not discern, shall have the mastery of our minds and be developed in our character, and thus our feet be caused to stumble, and we fall into Satan's net before we know that we are entangled.  The Lord would not have us ignorant of Satan's devices.  I consider that you are in need of watching unto prayer in order that not one hereditary or acquired habit shall be cherished that will lead you away from following Jesus, and from copying the great Pattern.  {13MR 274.2}

True faith works by love and purifies the soul.  Truth is an active, working principle, molding heart and life so that there is a constant upward movement, climbing the ladder Jacob saw, to the Lord above the ladder.  In every step of climbing, the will is obtaining a new spring of action.  The moral tone is becoming more like the mind and character of Christ.  {19MR 341.1}

The faith that is unto salvation is not a casual faith, it is not the mere consent of the intellect, it is belief rooted in the heart, that embraces Christ as a personal Saviour, assured that He can save unto the uttermost all that come unto God by Him.  To believe that He will save others, but will not save you is not genuine faith; but when the soul lays hold upon Christ as the only hope of salvation, then genuine faith is manifested.  This faith leads its possessor to place all the affections of the soul upon Christ; his understanding is under the control of the Holy Spirit, and his character is molded after the divine likeness.  His faith is not a dead faith, but a faith that works by love, and leads him to behold the beauty of Christ, and to become assimilated to the divine character.  [Deuteronomy 30:11-14 quoted.]  "And the Lord thy God will circumcise thine heart, and the heart of thy seed, to love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, that thou mayest live" (Deuteronomy 30:6).  {1SM 391.3}

Let this point be fully settled in every mind: If we accept Christ as a Redeemer, we must accept Him as a Ruler.  We cannot have the assurance and perfect confiding trust in Christ as our Saviour until we acknowledge Him as our King and are obedient to His commandments.  Thus we evidence our allegiance to God.  We have then the genuine ring in our faith, for it is a working faith.  It works by love.  Speak it from your heart: "Lord, I believe Thou hast died to redeem my soul.  If Thou hast placed such a value upon the soul as to give Thy life for mine, I will respond.  I give my life and all its possibilities, in all my weakness, into Thy keeping."  {1888 823.1}

When you present your petitions to the Lord, it should be in humility, without boasting of superior attainments, but with real soul hunger for the blessing of God.  Christ always knows what is cherished in the heart.  We must come in faith that the Lord will hear and answer our prayers; for "whatsoever is not of faith is sin."  Genuine faith is the faith that works by love, and purifies the soul.  A living faith will be a working faith.  Should we go into the garden, and find that there was no sap in the plants, no freshness in the leaves, no bursting buds or blooming flowers, no signs of life in stalk or branches, we would say, "The plants are dead.  Uproot them from the garden; for they are a deformity to the beds."  So it is with those who profess Christianity, and have no spirituality.  If there are no signs of religious vigor, if there is no doing of the commandments of the Lord, it is evident that there is no abiding in Christ, the living vine.  {YI, September 13, 1894 par. 2}
