I just finished reading Editor William Johnsson's article in the most recent Adventist Review about "so many translations."  He seems to think, like the rest of SDA's in high places, that the King James is too outdated for those of refined tastes.  The only problem with SDA's backing newer translations is that the new translations do not support SDA early (1st fifty years) theology.  Do you agree with Bill?  Why or why not?

It took me much prayer and about 3 or 4 months to finally read and understand the KJV.  I prefer it over all the rest.  I think later translations were interested in $ and copywrites.  It seems man wants to put his bias on everything.      \\

NKJV seems a close second...  If I knew Greek or Hebrew, those would be the best of all.

I personally use NKJV.  The ALT translation  of the New Testament is probably closest to the original as you can get today, but it is written in a style for study, not for reading.  Most all of the new English translations, and most others too i'm finding out, are based on the Alexandrian text, and are translated in the "dynamic" style, a word that means the translators only believe the ideas are from God, not the words, so they just translate what they think the ideas being presented are - not nice!!!  Unfortunately, many of the SOP books have been handled with that mind-set too....  To test your Bible to see if it is probably based on the Byzantine text or not, look at Revelation 22:14.

And what should we see at Rev. 22:14  ??

If the NKJV is your study bible, then are you going to start teaching what it says in 2 Peter 2:9 that the wicked dead are now being punished ? Each one of these new interpretation [not translations] has a specific doctrine of the SDA church they are to seek out and destroy. The NKJV interpretation has more diversions that just this one in 2 Peter.

I sure wish I could speak and read Greek and Hebrew.  Then, we wouldn't have these problems.

Newbie understanding the bible is not a fault of heavenly Beings it was written for the common man/women. When Jesus spoke to the people the "common people heard him gladly and they didn't even need a dictionary." SOP
Don't let those that studied Greek or Latin for years put a guilt trip on you as though your studies are inferior, they are the ones that are at a disadvantage from being taught from one mans mind.

Ed,

I guess this makes it so important for prayer before Bible study.

Do you know of other interpretations that were put into the translation of NKJV?

====================
Yes I can do that! But the question is do you have 30 days to spare? As it would take me that long to cover only 50% 0f them.
Acts 8: 37 is an example "And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God!"
========================
It is virtually impossible to attribute the omission of this vital statement to anything else than foul-play in the fact that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. The divinity of Jesus is a foundation doctrine of the Christian Church. To attack this doctrine is heresy of the most serious kind. Every modern translation that omits this vital fact (that Jesus is the Son of God or brackets this confession), regardless of its other merits, is unworthy of study. It should be set aside by all seekers of Truth.
===============
1 Tim.3:16 "God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory."
==================
Modern interpertations [not translations] have here substituted the word God with he: thereby undermining one of the greatest truth in all the Bible
Yes, Jesus Christ is God Son by being "begotten", thus making Him God. He had a human body, God incarnate, this is the foundation truth of the Christian faith that God actually came down to earth in the person of Jesus Christ. But alas! the modern translators have either left the word God out or changed the word to he; all because they did not really believe that Jesus Christ is God Son. Just this single mistranslation alone should be enough to set aside any man's book hitch-hicking and professing to be the Word of God.

Ed,   I have run across some faiths recently that believe Jesus is the only God in the Bible.  They believe Jesus is the spirit and Jesus is also the father.  They base everything on Acts where they baptize in the name of Jesus.  They say that name is singular and refers only to Jesus.  I wonder why that text in Acts didn't baptize in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost?

Thank you for those texts and explanation.  I can see where it leads to a lot of confusion among people and religions.  Satan's deception for sure.

Ed & Daniel,  I looked up 2 Peter 2:9  in the New King James Version and it reads okay.  But the NIV gives the impression that the wicked are currently being punished.

Well Newbie since I don't have a NKJV anymore suppose you post 2 Peter 2:9 and let us look at this twisting of God's word. If I am wrong I will go to every person I have led to believe otherwise and confess how wrong & foolish I have been, but here is a few other verses to consider

2 Timothy 2:15-KJV reads, "Study to shew thyself approved unto God." NKJV and NASV change "study" to "be diligent." NIV and RSV change "study" to "do your best."

Titus 3:10-KJV reads, "A man that is an heretick...reject." NKJV and NIV change "heretick" to "divisive man"; RSV and NASV to "factious" man. (The one who holds to heresy is to be rejected, not the one who exposes false doctrine. The new versions confuse who is in mind here).

Acts 4:27-KJV reads, "Thy holy child, Jesus." NKJV, NASV and RSV change "holy child" to "holy servant."

Acts 8:9-KJV reads, "bewitched the people." NKJV and NASV change "bewitched" to "astonished." NIV and RSV change "bewitched" to "amazed."

Romans 1:25-KJV reads, "changed the truth of God into a lie." NKJV, NASV and NIV read "exchanged the truth of God for the lie" or "a lie."

Romans 4:25-KJV reads, "Who was delivered for our offenses and was raised again for our justification." NKJV and NASV change "for" to "because of." (Even the NIV and RSV use the correct word, "for").

2 Corinthians 10:5-KJV reads, "Casting down imaginations." NKJV, NIV and RSV change "imaginations" to "arguments."

Colossians 3:2-KJV reads, "Set your affection on things above." NKJV, NASV, NIV and RSV change "affection" to "mind."

1 Thessalonians 5:22-KJV reads, "Abstain from all appearance of evil." NKJV, NASV and RSV change "appearance" to "form."

Trust me Newbie, I took Greek and Hebrew in College.  The persons teaching these languages made it quite clear to me.  Remember that as many people who go and try to interpret those original languages, that is how many different interpretations you will come up with in the end.  Everyone wants to say that their peculiar rendering of difficult terms is "correct."  Our proffesor used Dr. Metzger's Greek vocabulary rendering.  In my opinion, these newer rendering all undermine the KJV.  Do not think you are doing a service by learning the Greek and Hebrew and rewriting your Bible to the "correct" version.  It is helpful in a small degree to see the nuances of each language, but our KJ bibles are accurate enough to tell us all the truth we need to know if we have our receptors on to the holy spirit.

Ed, The main reason I looked this one up was I was concerned as my husband uses and likes the NKJV very much.  I was concerned that he not get the wrong ideas from reading a poor translation.  I was not trying to question your motives.  I believe you are right in that many translations lead a person to believe what the translator believes.  And, in the end translates a bias in the scripture.  I prefer the old KJV best but it was hard at first to get used to it.

2 Peter 2:8-9 NKJV  8 (for that righteous man, dwelling among them, tormented his righteous soul from day to day by seeing and hearing their lawless deeds)— 9 then the Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of temptations and to reserve the unjust under punishment for the day of judgment,

Ed, I think this is the one you were referring to right?

2 Peter 2:8-9 NIV 8(for that righteous man, living among them day after day, was tormented in his righteous soul by the lawless deeds he saw and heard)— 9if this is so, then the Lord knows how to rescue godly men from trials and to hold the unrighteous for the day of judgment, while continuing their punishment.[c]

Ed, Thanks for the other references and explanations.  I will look at those too.  I'm very concerned that people get the wrong impressions and therefore stay in the darkness.  newbie

Dennis,   I have found that everyone has an agenda.  When people get on to forums it is for a reason.  I also had an agenda when I entered the SDa forum.  But, I quickly dropped it when I found out what was really going on there.  I probably would have been kicked off long ago.

I'm active on another "healthy forum" where people have the truth about diet and lifestyle but they are in the dark about religion.  Have I had a chance to share and convince anyone of the truth in religion?  No, not yet anyway.  I just hinted at it one time and one person blasted the hint.  So, I kept quiet about the rest.  There is only 1 that seems open to at least looking at Bible scripture for guidance.

One of my healthy friends went on to a "Christian site" with the idea of enlightening them on how to get well and was blasted and thrown off.  She felt so bad.  And, her intentions were noble.  She was so surprised that they treated her terrible and it was a "Christian site."  She also tried to warn them about the eastern culture stuff they were all into.  You know, new age and all.  She got blasted.  She came back to our site for warm fuzzies and a soft place to fall.

The way I look at it is that if you have the truth and the proof then there is really no debate.  But, some people are not ready to make the move...... choices

some good info on Bible translations. I use the KJV. Notice it is a version not a translation. A version was taken from manuscripts ( the recieved or majority text) with a 90% comparability.

almost all modern bibles are from the minority text with about 5% comparibility this includes the NKJV. Not a true version but a translation. NIV is also a translation not a true version. It is true all modern bibles cannot be used to varifie all Adventist doctrines. Unfortuantly this is why our church leaders have adopted the NIV as the official church bible. And please avoid all paraphrases including the "clear word".

Just for a note the language of the KJV is not the language of the time but in the Bible language in as it follows the style of the greek and hebrew. The Thus and Thou and Thee are for specification that "you" cannot and does not effectively convey.

Yes, the King James Version is also a translation, as the Bible was not written in English originally.  There are 2 main streams of manuscripts - the Alexandrian, and the Byzantine.  The Alexandrian is more corrupt, and this is the stream that most of the new English Bibles are translated from.  Also, it is very interesting that most of the Bibles translated from the Alexandrian manuscripts are translated by people who only believe the ideas are from God, not the words themselves.

But let's face it, medieval English is like a foreign language, and we are in danger of doing the same thing the Catholic church did in making Latin the only official language of the church if we think that there is something somehow more holy in words like "hast", "lovest" etc.

I use the New King James Version, but for serious study, the Analytical Literal Translation (NT only) cannot be topped.

We should also face the fact that within our denomination, there are so many people usurping our pillar doctrines by the use and propagation of these "modern versions" of scripture, that to not cry out in protest would be a greivous sin against the holy spirit (should our consciences be so lead).  The KJV Bible is key to the formation of the pioneer watershed truths held by those who "came out of Babylon."  To forget this critical truth is to cast a cloak of darkness over the leading of the comforter, who leads into ALL truth.

It takes some time but all can learn to use the KJV fluently.  It uses stronger terms and does not water-down the truth.  NKJV seems okay for moderates.  For beginners, just start somewhere and then when you have deeper questions, graduate to the KJV for answers.  That's my 2 cents.
