It is very clear from inspired words given to Ellen White that pantheism is the alpha of apostasy in the SDA Church. I believe that panentheism is the omega that we know is coming some day. It has started already, in the form of "unconditional love".
Yes, I know unconditional love is very popular among conservative Adventists, of which group I consider myself a member, but it is even more popular among liberal Adventists, and the whole gamut of haters of Jesus Christ, from Wiccans to Evolutionists to Buddhists (actually, Muslims aren't big into it yet, but that might change). Just the fact that most all the haters of God agree on this doctrine of unconditional love, should give lovers of God's truth an occasion to pause and think and study and pray about this.
This video shows some of the background of the alpha of apostasy with Kellogg and Waggoner, and tries to explain what panentheism even is. That is a difficult thing to do, as this doctrine is so slippery and nice-sounding, that even Ellen White said she was told not to touch pantheism until the time arrived to torpedo it. Panentheism is basically pantheism on steroids!
So while I don't recommend spending much time on this issue, it might prove to be of value as you start to see more and more of this insidious doctrine creep into God's remnant church. Hopefully we can meet it head on, and sink it before it sinks us.
Romans 9:13 As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated.
Ezekiel 23:18 So she discovered her whoredoms, and discovered her nakedness: then my mind was alienated from her, like as my mind was alienated from her sister.
Ezekiel 23:22 Therefore, O Aholibah, thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will raise up thy lovers against thee, from whom thy mind is alienated, and I will bring them against thee on every side;
Ezekiel 23:28 For thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will deliver thee into the hand of them whom thou hatest, into the hand of them from whom thy mind is alienated:
Psalms 10:3 For the wicked boasteth of his hearts desire, and blesseth the covetous, whom the LORD abhorreth.
In the SOP quote below, "God's love as weak sentimentalism" is closely linked with modern spiritualism.
It is true that spiritualism is now changing its form and, veiling some of its more objectionable features, is assuming a Christian guise. But its utterances from the platform and the press have been before the public for many years, and in these its real character stands revealed. These teachings cannot be denied or hidden. {GC 557.2} Even in its present form, so far from being more worthy of toleration than formerly, it is really a more dangerous, because a more subtle, deception. While it formerly denounced Christ and the Bible, it now professes to accept both. But the Bible is interpreted in a manner that is pleasing to the unrenewed heart, while its solemn and vital truths are made of no effect. Love is dwelt upon as the chief attribute of God, but it is degraded to a weak sentimentalism, making little distinction between good and evil. God's justice, His denunciations of sin, the requirements of His holy law, are all kept out of sight. The people are taught to regard the Decalogue as a dead letter. Pleasing, bewitching fables captivate the senses and lead men to reject the Bible as the foundation of their faith. Christ is as verily denied as before; but Satan has so blinded the eyes of the people that the deception is not discerned. {GC 558.1}
I find that many of my SDA contacts and friends don't have a clue yet what "panentheism" is.
Many people have some fuzzy idea of what "pantheism" is, but haven't ever considered where that "Alpha" of apostasy is leading.
And admittedly, this doctrine is so slippery and hard to define, that it is not surprising that most of us can't grasp what it is.
Now I'm not saying that we all should study it, but we should be aware of what it is, and what is driving it (unconditional love), so that we don't fall prey to it ourselves, and so we can help keep others from getting sucked in by it.
The best way, is to believe that all the words in the Bible and SOP are God's words, but that position is very unpopular among so-called scholars in God's remnant church today.
