Second Advent Waymarks and High Heaps by Joseph Bates

Joseph Bates was one of the co-founders of the Seventh-day Adventist church. He was the driving force not only in getting the fledgling movement to accept the 7th day Sabbath message, he was also the pioneer in getting the SDA church to follow the health message, perhaps to a fault.

I've just typed in his book called: "Second Advent Waymarks and High Heaps, or a Connected View, of the Fulfilment of Prophecy, by Gods Peculiar People, From the year 1840 to 1847" by Joseph Bates (1847), and put it up on the internet.

The most striking things to me about it are the documentation of the arguments used against the SDA movement, the way that nearly all of the former Advent believers rejected their experience in the 1843/1844 movement, the study by Joseph Bates into the holy days of God, and the way of looking at world events and interpreting them to mean that the final end has come. 

While most of it is excellent, the part about interpreting every little world event to prove that Christ is at the door is something many of us SDAs still, unfortunately, are prone to do.  Also, Joseph Bates is quite good at making fun of his theological opponents, something which I, among many other SDAs are prone to do also.

May this book be a blessing to all, as we learn from our history, believe it, and move to higher planes as Jesus leads.

There seems to be prework messages given to ready the people to comprehend the messages of the Loud Cry.   I just discovered this moments ago. 

Quote

The health reform is as closely related to the third angel's message as the arm to the body; but the arm cannot take the place of the body. The proclamation of the third angel's message, the commandments of God, and the testimony of Jesus, is the burden of our work. The message is to be proclaimed with a loud cry and is to go to the whole world. The presentation of health principles must be united with this message, but must not be independent of it or in any way take the place of it.  {16MR 332.2}   End Quote

 

Quote

  All the messages given from 1840-1844 are to be made forcible now, for there are many people who have lost their bearings. The messages are to go to all the churches.  {21MR 437.1} End Quote

These messages seems to be for preparing SDA's to clear the Holy Spirit's highway into their hearts and to understand and give the loud cry, and non SDA's to recognize and receive the Loud Cry

  The world is preparing for the closing work of the third angel's message. The truth is now to go forth with a power that it has not known for years. The message of present truth is to be proclaimed everywhere. We must be aroused to give this message with a loud voice, as symbolized in the fourteenth chapter of Revelation. There is danger of our accepting the theory of the truth without accepting the great responsibility which it lays upon every recipient. My brethren, show your faith by your works. The world must be prepared for the loud cry of the third angel's message--a message which God declares shall be cut short in righteousness.  {10MR 218.3}  

     The message of the apostle James, depicting the misery of the rich who have done wickedly, is to be repeated as a message of warning and appeal. The instruction given in the first and second chapters of 1 Peter, exhorting believers to a godly life, is to be presented to the people. .......{10MR 218.4}  

 

     When the workers in the cause of God are converted in spirit, they will be willing to do the work that is waiting to be done. When they are willing to practice self-denial, they will have spiritual discernment to understand what the purposes of God are. Then they will remove from their hearts that which hinders them from cooperating fully with Him. And when they give evidence that they are determined to carry out the Lord's plans, and not their own devisings, decided changes will be seen. A spirit of humility and trust in God will reveal that God is a God of wisdom, and that His work is done in righteousness and truth.--Ms. 61, 1909, pp. 1-6. ("Words of Instruction," September 17, 1909.) {10MR 219.1} End Quote  

 

The Third Angel's Message is >

  The third angel's message is the proclamation of the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus Christ. The commandments of God have been proclaimed, but the faith of Jesus Christ has not been proclaimed by Seventh-day Adventists as of equal importance, the law and the gospel going hand in hand. I cannot find language to express this subject in its fullness.  {1888 217.3}  

     "The faith of Jesus." It is talked of, but not understood. What constitutes the faith of Jesus, that belongs, to the third angel's message? Jesus becoming our sin-bearer that He might become our sin-pardoning Saviour. He was treated as we deserve to be treated. He came to our world and took our sins that we might take His righteousness. Faith in the ability of Christ to save us amply and fully and entirely is the faith of Jesus. {1888 217.4}  End Quote

Great!  Glad that this little book will be of use. smile

I agree wholeheartedly that as we review the material that our spiritual forefathers have given us, that we will become better informed and have more zeal to spread the Three Angels' Messages.  They are all wrapped up in the "Faith of Jesus", and they each have specific points that must be given clearly and forcefully to the people.

"High Heaps" has to do with "Waymarks".  You make a waymark to show where you have been.  In the Bible there are several places (at least one I know of) where they made a "high heap" to commemorate an event (Jacob and Laban).  So the title is a reference to making a lasting reference to show how we have come to this point, so we don't forget our past. smile
