Well, you can read the original on this site.  I'm very curious about the 1884 version, which is said to be entirely different from the 1858 and 1888 versions.

Hello John Bechler-san,

The 1858GC's title is: "The Great Controversy Between Christ and His Angels, and Satan and His Angels".  It is for some unknown reason, known among us SDAs today as: "Spiritual Gifts volume 1".

The 1884GC's title is: "The Great Controversy Between Christ and Satan".  It is commonly referred to as: "Spirit of Prophecy volume 4" today.

The 1888GC had the same title as the 1884, but the 1911GC is now usually referred to just as: "The Great Controversy".

The 1858GC is in the first person, past tense in many situations: I saw, I heard, and past continuous tense in many situations: Satan was insinuating, etc. showing that the author received this directly thru a vision, a personal experience.  I saw is used 161 times in the 1858 version, but zero times in the later versions to refer to the author's experience.  The 1884 version takes away many of the first person expressions, but keeps a lot of the past continuous tense (was -ing).  The later 1888 and 1911 versions change the book by not only deleting all the first person expressions, but by changing the past continuous tense into simple past tense (-ed).  In other words, the later versions are written in history book style.

Why is this important?  One reason i can think of, is that when a book is written in history-book style, many people look on it as uninspired, just a history book.  That may help explain why many "scholars" in the SDA church such as Bacchiocchi say they would like to sit down with Ellen White and clear up a few of her mistakes.  NO!  God inspired the message with his Holy Spirit that he poured out on her, and her books are not to be modified by any scholars or anyone else.  They read as God wants them to.

Just as the Bible has been edited/mistranslated/paraphrased etc., inserting man's thinking, so a similar thing has happened to Ellen White's works.

Hopefully this helps out a bit.  The original 1858GC is here if you wish to see it now:

God bless your studies

I have a copy of letter # 56 July 25, 1911 in my lap as I type of where Ellen White said she approved of all the changes in the 1911 GC. On this typewritten letter she signed the letter TWICE! I guess the brethern that seem to know more than God [by us observing their behaviour] think that having two signatures is needed to verify its authenticty. No way! Willie White had rubber stamps of his mother signature that hirling shepherd signed this letter with. She herself stated in her published books that "nothing is to be lost of that which comes from God".& she had not the right to change what God had inspired.

Yes the 1858 GC should be read once a month by all ministers on the payroll & then change all their SDA sermons where they have departed from the faith "once delivered to the saints". After one warning fire all offenders, especially fire all those requiring seat-belt extensions when they fly commerical airlines. The ones having their own jets on the runway waiting to take them to ball games & such may be retained a while longer just so the honest in heart can always have an example to point to of far supreme nonsense will take a person bent on pleasing self..

2 signatures?  Guess that makes it doubly odd.

The lengths that some people will go to, to try and prove something....

I am really impressed as to how much you people know about these things.  I'm so enlightened and now I want others to know!

I just came from a seminar in Bern, Switzerland and there was a speaker from England who was talking about GC (actually promoting GC). I asked him what he thought about change such as the title, “Christ and His Angels, and satan and his angels” removed, and why the 1858 was written in first person past tense – I SAW….
He replied, some people seem to make a big deal out of these changes while infact Sis Ellen White blessed the late editions.
It didn’t make sense to me – God gives a sacred vision and then with time you edit His Word.

George, This last week the Peninsular Malaysia Mission President wrote in a email: "The mission is keen to promote all Spirit of Prophecy books too. We are selling them by a set of 10 titles, including the Great Controversy which revised by Mrs. Ellen G. White under the guidance of the Holy Spirit before she passed
away."

Of course the fact is, is that the Mission is doing practically nothing to promote Ellen White's books, later or earlier editions.

What bugs me, and is something i have to overcome, is that almost everyone thinks they know all about this issue, much more than i possibly could, even tho they have only read one or two articles written by someone regarding this, while i have looked at this issue carefully for over 25 years, carefully comparing the books with each other to see for myself if these things are so.

The truth will win, and we want to follow and obey the truth, because the truth is Jesus Christ.  smile
